Sweden says Trump's criticism of their Coronavirus strategy is 'factually wrong'

The Swedish government is saying that U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of their coronavirus strategy is, quote, "factually wrong."

And that, contrary to his statement, Sweden is not trying to achieve so-called "herd immunity."

Sweden has taken a more low-key approach to the pandemic compared to some other countries, and does not have a lockdown.

Anders Tengel is the chief epidemiologist at the Swedish Public Health Agency.

SOUNDBITE) (English) CHIEF EPIDEMIOLOGIST AT THE SWEDISH PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCY, ANDERS TEGNELL, SAYING:

REPORTER: "Last night the U.S. President Donald Trump said Sweden is suffering very greatly. I wonder if you were surprised by that assessment and if you share his opinion?''

TEGNELL: ''No, as we said here before, no we don't share his opinion. Of course, we're suffering. Everybody in the world is suffering right now in different ways. But Swedish healthcare, which I guess he alludes to - it's very difficult to understand - is taking care of this in a very, very good manner (...) Swedish healthcare is one of the best in the world and it continues to be like that."

Earlier this week, Trump accused Sweden of relying on ''herd immunity,’’ which in this case means isolating vulnerable groups but allowing large numbers of the population to become ill and develop immunity.

That way, drastic lockdowns like those across most of Europe and some American states aren’t necessary. The same effect can be achieved through vaccinations.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

"Now they talk about Sweden, but Sweden is suffering very gravely. You know that, right? Sweden did that, the herd, they call it the herd. Sweden's suffering very, very badly.

The Swedish Foreign Minister said Trump’s comments were “factually wrong” and that the country had adopted a number of tougher measures including closing homes for the elderly to visitors and holding higher education classes online, but is also relying more on personal responsibility.

As of Wednesday (April. 8), Sweden has suffered about 600 deaths from the disease. The United States had suffered almost 13,000.

There are a lot of things about Sweden that I’m not wild about. But their handling of the pandemic is not one of them. By and large their response has been measured and deliberate. And I would add that it has not been characterized by the hysteria we have seen in most of the rest of the world.

The U.S. has 32 times the population as Sweden. What's 32 x 600?

A: 19,200.

The population of Sweden is 10 million. This US is 330 million. So the deaths/million pop. of US is 40. For Sweden it is 60.

Sweden is now at 793 deaths. The neighboring countries of Norway, Denmark and Finland each have a population roughly half of Sweden. Their death totals are 108, 237 and 42.

Who cares is Sweden’s per capita death rate is slightly higher? The Swedes haven’t destroyed their economy and will have a lower death rate if there is a second wave of the virus.

Deaths per million people, April 9, 2020:

USA = 50.9

Sweden = 70.9

Country-to-country comparisons are highly misleading; especially when one country has well over thirty times the population of the other.

This is a poorly written article and has a hard time getting to any point at all, but they sum it up with "relying more on personal responsibility."

In other words, social distancing.

define “become ill”

not everyone who catches the virus “becomes ill” (i.e., has symptoms).

Are you really sick if you didn’t get sick?

The only question is when Sweden will change its mind.

This is “Tickling the Dragon’s Tail”, as the term was used in early nuclear research. How close can you get to a chain reaction with enriched uranium?

Sweden is trying to see how close they can get to overloading their healthcare with this thing. Try for the shortest curve possible, and hope it doesn’t get out of control.

Not to be heartless, but for the suffering involved, I would like to see data on the “economy” they are enjoying for this experiment. The whole world’s got to be taking a bit of a bath from this Chinese F-up, so I will be surprised to see Sweden economically showing a benefit to this.

especially when one country has well over thirty times the population of the other.

That is almost irrelevant when you have a process that grows exponentially with a 10-fold increase per week, 100 in two weeks 1000 in three. The difference is about a week and a half in time.

The relevant comparison is the rate of exponentiation vs. efforts to control the epidemic. And that involves not just blind numbers but explanations about what is actually different one place to the next.

Japan, S Korea, Taiwan and Singapore got off the exponential track almost before they got on it because they started mitigating immediately. But they are all racists who hate the CHICOMS.

It's always better to make ones point without using misleading statistics.
