Dems block McConnell bid to swiftly approve $250B more for small business fund

A $250 billion urgent request to shore up a depleting small business fund failed to pass the Senate Thursday after Democrats objected to the measure pushed by the White House and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

With lawmakers home and social distancing, McConnell sought to pass the cash infusion swiftly Thursday by unanimous consent with a skeleton group of senators, but Democrats blocked the effort because they want add-ons to help businesses in disadvantaged communities and an additional $250 billion in funds for other priorities.

The extra funding is being sought amid concerns that the original $350 billion program to help businesses stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic could run dry in the near future in the face of an enormous demand.

The stalemate in the Senate comes as a record-breaking number of Americans have filed for unemployment with the economy shutting down nationwide under stay-at-home orders. New jobless numbers out Thursday morning show a total of 16.8 million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits in the last three weeks.

Is this money for small businesses too small to unionize? Or would that come next?

Why can’t they ever just pass a “clean” bill and create their own bills for their little side/pet projects. I am so sick of the constant pork and special interests and totally unrelated crap added on to bills just because they know they’ll have to pass them, especially military spending bills.

This is going to go over like a lead fart with the People.

The Alinsky, ‘ leave no crisis unexploited’ strategy of the Demoncraps will fail to endear them with the electorate.

I agree. If it were up to me, every bill in Congress would deal with a single issue only.

Even the ones who qualify haven’t gotten any money yet. Banks really don’t want to make these low-profit loans, and appear to be deliberately slowing the process as much as possible.

Becuz they can get away with anything they want. Who will stop them, call them out? Certainly not the media and the GOP has its own issues as is.

We are a divided nation and it is becuz of this kind of crap going on forever. When was the last time an actual budget was presented and adhered to? Ask Nancy. She probably can’t remember back to those days..

It’s all about ‘Continuing Resolutions’, fanning fairy media farts into the air and obscuring the agendas of two flailing parties, no longer representative of this nation but only a desire to be loved by your opponents as you reach out across the aisle.. again.. and again.

Toughen up, republicans, Grow Some!!

You’re about to become one more extinct species... along with small businesses... and you seem OK with it.

Believe the Senator should call back the Senate to pass this emergency plan. Seem to remember someone saying to pass legislation required a quorum.
