America, it's been good knowin' ya

During the Great Depression, in the Dust Bowl of Pampa, Texas, folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote the song "Dusty Old Dust," which became famous for the apocalyptic line "It's been good to know ya" in the chorus. It was a time of depression and end-of-the-world speculation, sort of like ours.

Guthrie is most famous for his song "This Land is Your Land," which he wrote as a Marxist-leaning retort to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America" – which had become the de facto national anthem of the Depression era

There were some reports of people asphixiating because of inhalation of dust. This was after massive overplanting of wheat during a speculation bubble starting in the late 1920s, tearing out native grasses that kept the land together by their roots. The Dust Bowl. A film by Ken Burns. https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/dustbowl/

I watched a version the other day on American Experience. Coincidentally, it came on after the Spanish Flu epidode.

It is not a matter of “if,” it is a matter of how much we will lose after this. Twenty years ago no one ever heard of a school being put on lockdown, a prison term for controlling prisoners when there is a credible threat inside the prison. Now we hear of schools going into lockdown regularly, and no one is alarmed. Before the Boston Marathon Bombing, who ever heard of neighborhoods being placed on lockdown, but we all saw the armored personnel carriers rolling up residential streets while the cops aimed their rifles at people peering out of windows. While it is not as regular, neighborhood lockdowns still occur. Encroachment and apathy, this isn’t the last time we will be told we have to be destroyed to protect us from ourselves.

All that you mention is the fallout from losing a common culture, along with the values that came with it. We used to have virtual monolithic agreement on what what right, and how to protect ourselves. Now, we don’t fight enemies without, we have to deal with ensconced enemies within; our leftist neighbors and taxpayer-funded schools who want to pervert our children’s minds. It’s surreal how far we’ve fallen.
