War over Easter: Kansas lawmakers revoke Gov. Kelly’s order limiting church gatherings

Easter looming, Kansas Republican leaders on Wednesday revoked Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s order limiting religious gatherings to 10 people as the state’s coronavirus death toll jumped 40 percent.

House and Senate leaders — meeting as a body called the Legislative Coordinating Council — voted along party lines to throw out the directive. Their decision came as the number of reported COVID-19 cases in the state climbed to more than 1,000 and the death count ticked up to 38.

Church gatherings have produced three case clusters across the state and health officials fear Easter gatherings could further spread the deadly coronavirus. Pastors and priests now confront a stark choice: forgo in-person services on Christianity’s holiest day or open church buildings and potentially risk exposing parishioners.

Governors receive their “Emergency Powers” by an act of the Legislature.

The Legislature giveth and when the Governor overreacheth, the Legislature taketh away.

Good for them!

as the state’s coronavirus death toll jumped 40 percent.

Almost all of the state's cases have been in three counties: Wyandotte (Kansas City), Johnson (Kansas City), and Sedgwick (Wichita). The State's web site reports 38 deaths, but does not show what counties those deaths come from. Coronavirus is essentially non existent in Kansas outside of those three urban/suburban counties

I think closing everything down, especially in northwest Kansas is overkill. Our county has almost 20 cases now though, and is considered community spread. Some of those cases came from the church conference in Wyandotte County a week or two ago.

Yes, overkill for sure.

Leavenworth, my county, reports 59 confirmed cases as of today with 1 death. We share county lines with Wyandotte and Johnson who have the largest number of cases with 245 and 244 cases respectively. I don’t have the death count for those two counties. This is an urban disease and Kansas has a serious shortage of urban areas.

To NYC and other places, 40% sounds more alarming than 15.

I was born raised and graduated from Basehor.

Different area these days. I refer to it as North Johnson County.

If the churches hold in-person church services and two weeks later there is a surge in new infections, there will be consequences. In this climate, there will be severe consequences.

I looked into the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. Yes, it was called the “Spanish” Flu caused by our military returning home from Europe infected with the virus out of Spain.

In Philadelphia, while the flu was starting to spread, there was the controversy about whether to cancel the upcoming Liberty Loan parade. The city’s public health director was met with strong objection when he gave assurance that the parade could go on. The War Bonds it would generate were too important. About 200,000 participants and spectators filled the streets for the parade. 72 hours later, all 31 of Philadelphia’s hospitals were packed with the flu stricken and 2,000 people were dead by the end of the week.

In St. Louis, schools, movie theaters and pool halls were closed. All public gatherings were banned. At the height of its mortality rate St. Louis was only one-eighth of Philadelphia’s. Maybe this should be a history lesson for those ill-advised pastors who want to hold church services. Why would they live according to the Bible’s lessons in history and fail to follow other lessons in history?

The problem Fearpers and others need to convince me of is this:
This is a novel virus. If you are not exposed to it, you will not become immune. Until a vaccine is developed, you may be exposed to it, and get sick. How long do you Fearpers and other scaredy-cats expect the nation to remain shut down ntil your vaccine is produced? 18-36 months? We will have explosions of cases every single time we would release us back to normal. Anyone care to explain how keeping us locked down for years is better?

The WuFlu isn’t the Spanish Flu. Not even close.

Poor analogy.
