Kamala Harris as Joe Biden's running mate wouldn't help him that much
The Washington Examiner ^ | Apr 8, 2020 | Joseph Simonson

Many Joe Biden supporters want him to tap a person of color or a woman as his running mate, which zooms former 2020 Democratic primary rival Kamala Harris to the top of the list.

But the California senator's clashes with Biden during the primary process, and her poor performance in the presidential race, could limit the chances the former vice president and presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee taps her as his running mate.

Not that the possibility isn't a hot topic in political and media circles. During an interview with The View on Wednesday, the California senator was asked whether she'd be open to running for vice president with Biden, the presumptive 2020 Democratic nominee.

"I've known Joe for a long time, I have a great deal of affection for him, and I believe he will be an extraordinary president," said Harris, 55, who dropped her presidential bid on Dec. 3 amid sinking polls and laggard fundraising.

"So, I know that conversation is taking place in the press and among pundits, and I'm honored to be considered if that's the case," Harris said. "But I have to be very, very honest with you — I am full-time focused on what we need to do to address the coronavirus.”

Throughout her appearance, Harris lavished praise on Biden's history on issues related to healthcare and the economy, a contrast with her attacks on him during the Democratic primary.

Biden has said that he's consulting with former President Barack Obama, under whom he served as vice president 2009 to 2017, on the best choice for his understudy. And Biden, 77, has said nothing to tamper speculation that Harris is being heavily considered.

"The most important thing, and I've actually talked to Barack about this — the most important thing is that there has to be someone who, the day after they’re picked, is prepared to be president of the United States of America if something happened,” Biden said last month.

But the choppy history between Harris and Biden might make the match difficult.

Despite Harris's claims that the two agree on enough policy that there wouldn't be any tension in a hypothetical pairing, the primary platforms of the two tell a different story.

Although it sometimes bordered on incoherent in the details, one of the boldest propositions of her presidential platform was a modified version of "Medicare for all," Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders's proposal to end private health insurance in favor of a government program. Harris, a former San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, later backtracked on that position that included a government-run system. Instead she talked up one that included private insurance companies competing, closer to Biden's "public option" proposal.

At one debate, Harris attacked Biden's healthcare proposals as maintaining the "status quo," which would "do nothing" about health insurance companies "jacking up co-pays [and] jacking up deductibles."

Then, there was the Biden-Harris clash at the first Democratic debate in Miami last June. Harris spent much of her opening remarks targeting Biden over his history on racial issues.

"You also worked with them to oppose busing," Harris said about Biden's 1970s-era stances, in a clip that later went viral and dominated the news cycle for a week. "There was a little girl in California who was part of the second class to integrate her public schools and she was bused to school every day. That little girl was me."

During the next debate, Biden told Harris to "go easy on me, kid."

The conventional wisdom surrounding a Harris pick is that she can help shore up black support for Biden. Yet Harris, daughter of a Jamaican father and Tamil Indian mother, did not even make it to the Iowa caucuses before dropping out and never placed any higher than third place among black voters nationally, losing to both Biden and Bernie Sanders consistently. Some polls even had her behind Elizabeth Warren in states where blacks make up a majority of the electorate, such as South Carolina.

Biden ended up winning South Carolina with nearly two-thirds of the black vote and performed even better in the Alabama and Mississippi primaries, states with similar demographics. In a number of congressional districts, which in many states are the basis for awarding delegates to the Democratic National Convention, Biden performed better than Obama in his successful 2008 presidential run.

Traditionally, vice presidential slots are reserved for those who can help the presidential candidates counter their electoral vulnerabilities. In 2016, that meant Mike Pence was selected to reassure evangelicals and traditional Republicans skeptical of Trump, an insurgent in Republican politics with a history of a libertine lifestyle. In 2008, Biden, a 36-year Delaware senator and native of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was chosen to help win over white working class voters for the Obama ticket.

Nor does Harris come from a swing state, unlike Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer or Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, a state Trump is targeting in 2020 after narrowly losing there in 2016.

Biden's electoral vulnerabilities are currently centered around young voters, who overwhelmingly supported Sanders. Harris never made it to a primary to see how she would actually fare with those aged under 35, but polling suggested she brought the same liabilities that hurt her with other voting groups.

No, it wouldn't help him at all, but I bet we'd get an awful lot of this.

Heels-Up wouldn’t help Biden “that much” and she wouldn’t help America at all!

I’m still betting on Cankles, followed by a trip to the Ft. Marcy Park Acres Rest Home.

Her “negotiations” with slo-joe might be construed as pre-meditated job advancement.

(He’s an old man, after all.)

Brings a whole new dimension to the Peter Principle

Kamala Harris as Joe Biden’s running mate wouldn’t help him that much>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Not so sure about that.

She has a history of liking older men. Ask former mayor Willie Brown.

Kamala could very well become president within 2 years if Joe happens some how to be erected.

I hope he picks Stacy Abrams. She’s a sure loser. That ticket won’t take Georgia for sure.

In Joe’s mind, she’s sniffable. In Kamala’s mind, he’s snuffable.

But in Democrat kool aid drinking circles, Stacey Abrams was elected governor of Georgia.

And since she won a statewide election in Georgia, then she would help Biden carry Georgia.

That’s their logic anyway.

Neither of Sen. Kamala Harris’ parents were American citizens at the time of her birth.

The deliberately ignorant will be here shortly to show that they are.
