CORAOPOLIS, Pa. A local family decided to have their father try the anti-malaria drug showing promise as a possible treatment for COVID-19.
Channel 11 first told you about 76-year-old Bob Schrecengost last week, when another patient at his nursing home, Caring Heights Community Care and Rehab Center in Coraopolis, tested positive for COVID-19.
This weekend, his family got the news that he, too, tested positive.
"It was extremely difficult for all of us in my house to hear the news, said his daughter, Lisa Smarra.
Smarra visits her dad outside his window at Caring Heights every day. He has dementia, so she is tasked with making his medical decisions.
Smarra first heard hydroxychloroquine touted as a possible COVID-19 treatment during a presidential briefing. But while the drug shows signs of promise, clinical studies are still underway. She discussed the risks with her dads doctor.

How did he get it?
I heard yesterday that a doctor gave pt a different antibiotic because of side effects of z pak. Pt lived. Don’t know name of other antibiotic.
Zinc is very important, I understand.
IT IS WAY MORE RISKY TO DRIVE A CAR!!!!
If this was your father, would you prescribe it for your father?’ And he said that he would, Smarra said.”
In these serious pre drug or procedure.
I ask the doc if their Dad or Grand Dad are still alive, and if they say yes.
The next question, “Do you like them?”
After they say yes, I grin and then ask “Would you do this procedure or rx this drug for them?
All but one has said yes. The one who said no, told me to dc one of the drugs, I was on and come back in a few days. I did, and it worked out.
My wife just sits back and watches the show.
You’re absolutely right.
I’ve never seen one nor has any other Ophthalmologist I know.
How many times has hydroxychloriqine been used regarding the Coronavirus?
How many times has the patient seen good results?
How many times has the patient not seen any significant result?
It is easier to make these decisions on a person you read about. But when it comes to your own mother or father or other person you can for, it is so hard. That is why those papers you describe are so important.
Sister and I have contract with each: we want the cocktail. And the other one - get rx for prophylactic purposes.
Did I make that clear. getting like ole Biden
Choice is good. No choice ...not so much.
I agree, with the dementia, I would have passed on the treatment. Maybe a morphine drip to keep comfortable.
This is a good time for families to discuss and update their wills. Compile the info your descendants will need to close your affairs. Do you want them to know about that hidden key to a safe deposit box or your life insurance policy?
Youre right just let him die.
Did you ask your patients if they had reduced kidney or liver function?
The doctor had to balance the risks.
I'm currently on Plaquenil - (Hydroxychloroquine) 200 mg x 2/day, for CREST syndrome (Rheumatoid/Scleroderma). It has worked very well for me and I hope it is the medicine we need to combat this virus.
The risks are minimal, benefits life saving. I don't know where get your information but I would do some more research.
scared of what??
I watched Dr Oz today for the first time ever. He had on the doctor form Paris who has treated 1000 plus patients with the anti-malaria drug and another doctor from NYC who treats his Lupus patients with the same drug.
Both said the drug is perfectly safe and the only times they have had issues with the drug was in the 60’s when they gave out dosages which were to high.
YES
It called review of systems and it starts every physical exam.
Does anyone have a response to an assertion made in the Huffington Post that the President is touting this drug because he has a financial stake in the drug company that is making it?????
Of course that is BS but I need a link if possible to a response.
I know a guy with rheumatoid arthritis who dump Plaquenil for CBD!
First of all, CBD is a chunk of change and secondly who knows what the side effects are???
OTC stuff has side effects, not regulated, but the government has no problem with us gobbling it down. And it’s made in China!!!
Can your mom take doxycycline?
What about doxycycline instead of azithromax?
Or is it the hydroxy that is the problem?
