... Remdesivir has been recently recognized as a promising antiviral drug against a wide array of RNA viruses (including SARS/MERS-CoV5) infection in cultured cells, mice and nonhuman primate (NHP) models. ..... Chloroquine, a widely-used anti-malarial and autoimmune disease drug, has recently been reported as a potential broad-spectrum antiviral drug.8,9 Chloroquine is known to block virus infection by increasing endosomal pH required for virus/cell fusion, as well as interfering with the glycosylation of cellular receptors of SARS-CoV.10 Our time-of-addition assay demonstrated that chloroquine functioned at both entry, and at post-entry stages of the 2019-nCoV infection in Vero E6 cells (Fig. 1c, d). Besides its antiviral activity, chloroquine has an immune-modulating activity, which may synergistically enhance its antiviral effect in vivo. Chloroquine is widely distributed in the whole body, including lung, after oral administration.

Would liberal media call the authors “Trumpian Chinese scientists behind Chloroquine”?

There is certainly a rationale for conducting some clinical studies of the efficacy of chloroquine for treating Covid-19. The appeal of chloroquine is that it is already approved by regulatory agencies, so the process of getting it approved for this indication if it shows efficacy is can happen very quickly.

Remdesivir, however, is a lot further from regulatory approval, although some studies are going on in China at this time. I do not know how the FDA will proceed if it shows efficacy in the Chinese trials, since it really has not had full safety/efficacy clinical trials which take several years and are required for drug approval. It could be that the FDA will give a limited approval for Covid-19, with any further approval contingent upon successfully completing the normal clinical trial process.

The other component of fighting Covid-19 with science is the development of a vaccine. That takes a while, though.

If it turns out this treatment actually is effective then every so called expert, pundit and politician who called this quackery, needs to be marched out in public and humiliated for potentially costing people’s lives.

Wow! What a surprise. I wonder if we’ll soon find a polio vaccine that works, too?

One would think we would be done with “things that come out of China”.
