Gun Law Reform in Bolsonaro's Brazil, Homicides Drop Precipitously
In December, 2018, in an article published by the Wall Street Journal, this pronouncement was made. From the wsj.com:
Now, Brazil is set to embark on an experiment that will determine what happens when you loosen gun restrictions in a country battling an overpowering wave of gun crime.
Homicides in Brazil were at historic highs in 2017. They dropped a bit in 2018, as candidate Bolsonaro ran on reform of the gun laws to allow self-defense, and reform of the law to get tough on crime. The homicide numbers dropped from 59,000 in 2017, to 51,000 in 2018. President Bolsonaro was elected in October of 2018.
After taking office on 1 January 2019, President Bolsonaro issued his first decree reforming some of Brazil's extreme gun laws on 15 January 2019. The drop in Brazil's homicide rate accelerated.
Gun control in Brazil has a long history. By 1997, restrictions on gun ownership were deemed as severe by the Wall Street Journal. From the wsj.com:
In Brazil's violent cities, where 90% of the murders are committed with guns, ownership restrictions have become so severe that Taurus has branched out into motorcycle helmets, bulletproof vests, and auto parts.
(snip)
Brazil's 1997 law, which requires gun owners to have unblemished police records and pass rigorous psychological and shooting-proficiency tests, has slashed Taurus's sales to private individuals by more than 80% in the past two years, Mr. Murgel says. Taurus has sought to make up for that with an aggressive push into motorcycle helmets and increased gun sales in the U.S., where Taurus's advertising spending is up threefold this year.

God created man.
Sam Colt made them equal.
Brazil has figured it out.
We have owned two Taurus pistols. Both were crap and were traded in for something better. Thats almost anything else, btw.
That being said theyre better than nothing and I wish the honest citizens of Brazil nothing but the best. I hope they buy ten million of them.

Anybody who’s watched the YouTube channel ‘Active Self Protection’ knows all about Brazil.
And another video out of, surprise, Brazil...
They should just go all out and ISSUE a gun to every competent citizen
Heck, the 40 outperformed my Barreta 40 even with sand mags when exposed for days to S Texas sugar sand.
This said, I am thinking about trading both in on a new Sig compact. They both are getting pretty rough from use.
If only the Democrats could read and weren’t communists.
We had two Taurus revolvers. Crappy triggers, light strikes, god awful accuracy, just poor workmanship generally.
But they were cheap.
Glad to hear the quality has improved.

It weights 17 ounces.
It is not quite as accurate as a Hammerli. I cannot get much better than 1" groups at 50 feet. A Hammerli can get .5 inch groups at 50 feet.
It is amazingly reliable.
It was designed and made in America, at the Taurus plant here.
To be fair this was years ago. And as I said these were revolvers. Im glad to hear theyve improved.

In it, they talked about how much President Bolsonaro has loosened Brazil's gun laws.
They mentioned that Brazil has a very high homicide rate.
There was not one word about the precipitous drop in homicides in the first year of President Bolsonaro's administration.
The NYTs article is quoted in the Ammoland article.
Taurus pistols can be hit or miss, pun intended.
Some of their revolvers and small pocket semiatuos are horrible.
But their Beretta 92 clone the PT92 is very good. It should be, because they bought the factory that Beretta set up in Brazil to manufacture 92s for the Brazilian armed forces. The nice thing about the PT92 is that the safety/decocker is frame mounted, not slide mounted.
And Taurus also tries for innovation. For example, they created the category of handgun that shoots both .410 shot shells and .45 Long Colt with the Taurus Judge. And they created the hideous Taurus Curve.
She said that they were so violent that the Brazilian army doesn't dare try to enter...even in daylight.
That kinda changed our attitude toward the city.
I wonder what is happening in the favellas with the coronavirus. It seems exactly the type of environment the virus would thrive in.
True...but Rio is a tropical city and it’s late summer there. So if the virus doesn’t thrive in warm weather they might not have a problem.
“And Taurus also tries for innovation. For example, they created the category of handgun that shoots both .410 shot shells and .45 Long Colt with the Taurus Judge. “
How is that model, is it ok as far as quality & accuracy?
I had an old Taurus revolver. One time at the range I fired a shot and the hammer snapped in half.
I traded it in.
I've never shot one, I've only fondled them at the gun store.
Frankly I can't see the reason to own one, other than the novelty, or you live in rattlesnake country.
In order not to be classified as a short barreled shotgun by the ATF, the Judge must have a rifled barrel. A shotgun with a rifled barrel is an anti-choke, which spreads the shot pattern out so wide, so quickly, that it only has an effective range of a few yards.
As far as self defense goes, the best load isn't any form of .410 buck or slug load, but a .45 Long Colt. The reason is that the Judge has such a short barrel that you lose a lot of velocity compared to an 18" shotgun barrel. (There are a couple of specialty loads in .410 that are designed for hanguns, but even those have relatively lower velocities than a .410 shotgun.)
Given that, you may as well just buy a revolver in a traditional handgun caliber and lose the cartoonishly long cylinder.
If you do want one, but want the highest quality, Smith & Wesson started making a clone called the Governor. Same concept as the Judge, but with S&W revolver quality.
My son read that the Favella king pins are enforcing curfews and isolation rules.
