Inslee extends statewide school closure order through end of year to tame COVID-19

OLYMPIA, Wash. - The statewide closure of all public and private schools that began last month will be extended through the remainder of the academic year to help stem the spread of coronavirus, Gov. Jay Inslee and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal announced Monday.

The extension of the closure was made public at a special afternoon press conference.

The governor and schools chief broke the news to all school district superintendents statewide in a special conference call earlier on Monday.

"This unprecedented health emergency demands that we take this step," Inslee said at the press conference. "We are encouraging educators to do your best at this time."

The statewide school closure began March 17 and originally was set to expire on April 24. But under the extended order, all public and private K-12 schools in Washington state will be prohibited from providing traditional, in-person instruction through the end of the school year on June 19. Instruction can still happen via distance learning.

The order affects 1.2 million students in kindergarten through 12th grade in public, private and charter schools across Washington state. The order also asks schools to start planning for a potential expansion of the order into the summer and fall, as a precaution.

The extension of the closure was not unexpected. Reykdal said Friday in a question-and-answer session that it would be "really tough" to restart traditional classroom prematurely "because we want to make sure people are safe."

"And if we rush back to school and put all of us back in tight classrooms and bring everyone back into our buildings, there's a chance that our caseload peaks back up again and that would absolutely be the worst thing for public health," he added.

Reykdal also said Friday that high school seniors will still be allowed to graduate as long as they meet state requirements.

And he said steps are being taken to make certain that students' grade point averages do not suffer as a result of the coronavirus closure.

School's out for summer
School's out forever
School's been blown to pieces
No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher's
Dirty looks
Out for summer
Out till fall
We might not come
Back at all

School's out forever
School's out for summer
school's out with fever
School's out completely

Well that’s interesting.
Once they figure out kids are away from the indoctrination, they’ll find a way to ban home schooling.

We expected this out the outset, once the virus hit the US, as it would be far more than just the flu (Bro). The BIGGER QUESTION is whether schools re-open for the fall, and if so, under what conditions.

Homeschoolers are now ahead of the pack. I wonder why you don’t see news on that. I don’t have any kids homeschooling now or in the past, just an observation.

I would hope the Teachers and administrators would be laid off as non-essential personnel. It isn’t right that they get full pay for working 2/3rds of a teaching year. You want to see how fast they get back to work if that happened?

Don;t like this as this begins to bump up against my fair season in WA State. I am beginning to worry that our entire year will be cancelled. That will be a hit from which we will not be able to recover. At our age, there isn’t anything else we can do...much less work for anyone else...

Now the kids will be gathering here and there without being 6 ft. apart and with no social distancing the virus will go rampant.

If they were in school, even in an enclosed classroom they would be contained. They could be made to wash their hands, wear masks and all that good stuff.

Also, it would be a real-world experiment to see if the virus is as contagious as were are being indoctrinated to believe.

Well, my two who are still in school are STILL in school....they do homeschool online learning, and have been doing so since the beginning of the school year.

Granted, they’re on spring break through this week but will be back to it next Monday morning.

This latest edict from Comissar Inslee doesn’t really affect me. However, I do feel bad for those who would be graduating this year. Some kids really do look forward to walking on stage to get their diploma.

If there’s no school then do we have to pay the school tax on our property tax? Hell no.

well, it would be really tough for the teachers to HAVE to come back into the classroom...this way, they can stay in their pjs all date sipping coffee and talking to kids over the web cam...

all of this because we couldn't tell the vulnerable to just stay home...

nope...we have to destroy the economy and the educational opportunities for our youth....

grandma and grandpa better be handing out big checks for Christmas...

I don’t see how it is possible to do distance-learning this long to get a well rounded education. Courses like English can be done with distance learning fairly easily, but what about Science, technology and engineering courses that generally require some form of hands-on lab experience as well. I don’t see a way to teach those skills virtually.

I live in Washington (King County), and about 80-90% of the CV deaths are in two counties, King and Snohomish. There are about 19 counties with zero CV deaths, and about seven or eight with fewer than five. This seems like overkill, especially if we are nearing the peak within a few days.

Reykdal also said Friday that high school seniors will still be allowed to graduate as long as they meet state requirements.

If they already met the state requirements, then why didn't they already graduate?

Have they recently lowered the state requirements, since they shut down the schools?
