Trump says he 'may look into' dismissal of ousted Naval captain

President Trump on Monday said he may look into the dismissal of a Naval captain who was relieved of his duty aboard the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt after warning of an outbreak of coronavirus on board in a letter that leaked to the press.

The controversy surrounding the exit of Capt. Brett Crozier was amplified on Monday when acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly told the sailors aboard the ship that the captain was "naive” or "stupid" to think the letter would not leak.

Heard some of the Roosevelt sailors were disrespectful to the ASECNAV as to his comments made onboard.

He let the condition of his ship leak. That is not good. But what I don’t know is if he did it because he thought the lives of his sailors were in peril.

Heck, I have enough issues following work politics, let alone Big Navy games

Nothing wrong with looking out for his men, mistake was not staying within chain of command.

He basically called them stupid and naive so it's perhaps understandable that some may not have appreciated that.

He still serves, and he has his retirement. It could have been worse. It was a major error in judgment. He was treated fairly. Perhaps if we weren't in a very serious cold war with China it might have been different.

He will look into it, realize this man failed in following the chain of command, and agree he needed to be removed from command. His communication betrayed military readiness protocol.

Heard the tape of that talk to USS Roosevelt. The response from some in the crew loudly at this part back at him was “WTF!?” (Redacted)

No. He called the Captain that.

And a large percentage of the crew, perhaps a large majority of the crew, liked and respected that captain. If he was stupid and naive then so where they for liking and respecting him.

Then again, he MAY not.
From what I know of his actions he deserved to be shit-canned. Not discussing any of this with the Fleet Commander whose Stateroom was just down the passageway makes his actions even more unacceptable.
Complete and inexcusable breach of OpSec. A JO would have been discharged for such an act. The CO of a Carrier should be court-martialled, reduced in rank and, forced to retire in disgrace.
As for rumors of some sailors being unhappy with SecNav’s harsh words well, you will always in any group of thousands of people not be able to get 100% agreement with any action. Their agreement is unnecessary in this matter. The message has been sent. OpSec violations are intolerable.

Modly definitely stated that about the captain. I'm not so sure it was the best thing for the ASECNAV to jump into this issue in this manner at this time. I'm wondering where the Navy flag officers are at during this mess.

"He basically called them stupid and naive so it's perhaps understandable that some may not have appreciated that."

"WASHINGTON (AP) — In an extraordinary broadside punctuated with profanity, the Navy's top leader accused the fired commander of the COVID-stricken USS Theodore Roosevelt of being "too naive or too stupid" to be in charge of an aircraft carrier."

ASECNAV was not referring to the crew.

Teddy Roosevelt did it when he was a colonel, and he and his men were in Cuba, sitting ducks for Malaria and Yellow Fever. All the divisionary commanders, agreed with him, but he sent the letter to the general.

And Roosevelt deliberately sent it to the Associated Press!

Which saved his men's lives.

Trump already trashed the man at one of his daily briefings. He’s not going to revisit it.

No Mr. President, let the Navy take care of the matter, just focus on our country and don’t micro-manage.

He didn’t “let it leak”. He CC’ed it to 22 people who were not in his chain of command and sent it in the open.

And his letter was childish. It was something a sailor’s mother might have written. It didn’t contain a word about his immediate needs to keep the ship 100% combat ready.
He didn’t ask for replacement sailors to be rushed to fill in for the ones he needed off the ship. He didn’t ask for extra personnel or supplies. he didn’t warn them that a carrier in port may need to accelerate it’s deployment schedule. Nothing about readiness except a whiney “if he can’t get his way they would do the best they could even though we are all sick”.

This man child had no place running a carrier Look at his idiotic grinning official photo. Compare it to Admiral Halsey, Nimitz, Badger, Mitscher, Kinkaid, King, etc... All look grim and half annoyed they had to pose for a photo.

And his ship was so undisciplined that they all gathered into a packed crowd of HUNDREDS of sailors to cheer him goodbye and tweet it out on social media...live.

Good riddance.

As a former O-6 level commander, my opinion is that this guy is clearly an idiot. No points for the Asst SECNAV either, the Skipper’s superior should have done the job. Why in the world did this Captain send an email to his boss who was in his cabin just down the passageway and then .CC this same email to persons not in the chain of command and not in the Navy? He should have pulled the pin on a grenade, thrown it in his sleeping bag and then jumped in after it.

Modly definitely stated that about the captain.

And if the captain was stupid and naive then what does that say to all those crew members who liked and respected him? Wouldn't they be stupid and naive too?

The captain compromised, intentionally or not, the battle readiness of a United States Aircraft carrier, one of the most formidable projections of might any nation possesses, if they can keep a single one running at all.

He should be summarily court martialed broken in rank and tossed out of the service.
