Grocery workers are key during the virus. And they’re afraid

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Every day, grocery workers are restocking toilet paper, eggs, produce and canned goods as fast as the items fly off the shelves.

They disinfect keypads, freezer handles and checkout counters as hundreds of people weave around them, sometimes standing too close for comfort amid the coronavirus pandemic. Some work for hours behind clear plastic barriers installed at checkout counters, bulwarks against sudden sneezes or coughs that can propel germs.

They aren’t doctors or nurses, yet they have been praised for their dedication by Pope Francis, former U.S. President Barack Obama and countless people on social media, as infections and death counts rise.

From South Africa to Italy to the U.S., grocery workers — many in low-wage jobs — are manning the frontlines amid worldwide lockdowns, their work deemed essential to keep food and critical goods flowing. Some fear falling sick or bringing the virus home to vulnerable loved ones, and frustration is mounting as some demand better workplace protections, including shorter hours to allow them to rest, and “hazard” pay for working closely with the public.

I wonder if one of the results of all this is that we see quicker adaptation of kiosks and robots. They can’t catch viruses (although I am sure they are vulnerable to technical viruses from ‘The Cloud’)

Correct that. unemployed and idiotic.

This thing ain’t the black death.

But only a closed minded jerk wouldn’t be a little afraid to catch a virus that is very contagious and could make you dead within a month.

I understand that Walmart has had a couple of employees die of the virus.

They tend to employ a lot of seniors there. I’ve had cashiers ring me out who were at least 80. Guess I can understand if they are afraid.

Life is full of risks. Here we are cowering in place; if we get through this and return to normalcy, there will be people resuming life and statistically, some of those people will die from car accidents, terminal illnesses, heart attacks etc.

There is no cure for death

I don't know too many who are afraid.
They are:

1. Working instead of home watching someone tell then how scared they should be

And

2. Not hearing about any cases in our area.

I suppose grocery workers in crowded hotspots might be scared. Out here in flyover country? Probably the sort of people who follow celebrities are scared but in general the pandemic has been all talk and the fear came and left early on.

Been going to the same store for years, all the regular employees are just going about their business as if nothing is different. But they know they’re doing their part to keep things running.

Stress and fear raises inflammation which means you’re must more likely to get very sick

I plan to not use those when possible.

As things are, if I am shopping and they close all the lines with cashiers I leave my cart where it is, and shop later.

None of the mom and pop places I go to on special occasions when I eat out have kiosks.

Re: truckers. Someone posted this ad locally

I would like to know if anyone in {city}, or the surrounding area, would like to help feed those awesome truck drivers out there! They are helping us survive these troubling times by risking their health to give us the food we desperately need. I would like to set up a pot luck lunch or dinner for these brave warriors at either the rest stop in {city} or at one of the truck stops here. If you would like to donate homemade food, please reply to this post. Also, if you know someone who works at a truck stop, maybe you could ask them if we could set this function up over there. I would like to do this next week if possible. Please share your thoughts with me people of {city}....

I guess her heart is in the right place.

I heard the same thing on my last visit from the checkout clerk and the bagger. The comments were sharp.

"A co-irker told me that yesterday he saw some woman crossing a street with a clear plastic bag on her head."

How about entire plastic bottles?

Their labor is worth more to society than many people making 10x more.

Many of the top 5% are at home watching netflix all day while these people keep them fed.

“if we get through this and return to normalcy”

I’m doubtful if we’ll ever see “normalcy” again ... ever. The WuFlu terrorists have been too effective, and fear has been so ingrained that some never will be able to come out of that trance.

Well money shifts eventually from the slothful to the productive.

Sometimes it takes awhile.

The five percent being fed by us while they watch Netflix are hemorrhaging money I guess.

The productive are scooping it up in general.

Even here on FR. Spit on all those who fought for our Freedom. Gave it away in exchange for what will turn out to be no security at all.

Yeah right. 95% of America is not “afraid” and would go back to work tomorrow. Lift the tyrannical bans and lets see who is “afraid”.

The other 5% are: 4% Prog operatives and 1% Chicken Freepers.

“Concerned” has now been replaced by “afraid”.
