‘Grandfather of allergy’ survived three years in Japanese POW camp before pioneering medical career
Dr William Frankland, a pioneering British immunologist who transformed the world’s understanding of allergies, has died aged 108.
Frankland improved the lives of millions of hay fever sufferers by developing the idea of a pollen count. Until his death the oldest survivor of the Japanese prisoner of war camps, he published a scientific paper in September 2017 aged 105.
Known as “the grandfather of allergy”, Frankland’s medical career spanned 70 years. He was a British army doctor in the second world war and spent three and a half years as a POW, later crediting his survival to his ability to treat Japanese troops.
“I’ve come close to death so many times – from the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, three and a half years spent as a Japanese prisoner of war, to experiencing anaphylaxis following a tropical insect bite,” he said. “But somehow I’ve always managed to miss it and that’s why I’m still here.”

He was old, and someone had coronavirus within a two mile radius of him. I’m sure he’s a virus death stat.

Yeowch. And still made it to 108. Damn good run.
By experimenting on himself and making himself immune to different allergies may have toughened up his immune system enough to prolong his life.
Whatever he did to improve his health definitely worked. Wow. 108. Hell of a run!
