Most coronavirus patients who end up on ventilators go on to die, according to several small studies from the U.S., China and Europe.
And many of the patients who continue to live can't be taken off the mechanical breathing machines.
"It's very concerning to see how many patients who require ventilation do not make it out of the hospital," says Dr. Tiffany Osborn, a critical care specialist at Washington University in St. Louis who has been caring for coronavirus patients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
That concern is echoed by Negin Hajizadeh, a pulmonary critical care doctor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell on Long Island, N.Y.
"We have had several patients between the hospitals across the Northwell system that have come off the breathing machine," Hajizadeh says. "But the vast majority are unable to."
The largest study so far to look at mortality among coronavirus patients on ventilators was done by the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre in London. It found that among 98 ventilated patients in the U.K., just 33 were discharged alive.

Italy has had bet few deaths of young and/or healthy people. The deaths are majority old men who smoke and have additional factors.
We need to see ventilator stats by age, sex, and health factors.
Italy also records any death as a Corona death of the virus is present. Even if the virus was just one factor of many.

Naturally Pessimistic Retards.
I Hate using that word as it is outdated, but I needed something for the D.
Sure what they are saying isn’t fake news.
But it wouldn’t even be printed if Trump wasn’t president.
NO good news can be printed.
they want to paint the absolutely darkest picture they can.
And it’s sickening
No kidding. I wonder if they perform at kids parties...they are such a joy.
ROFL!!!
3/4 of the kids would be found dead from suicides a week later!
Looks its NPR the Clown - Hey, kids, you know grandma doesnt have very much longer to live ...honk...honk..
LOL
Give them IV vitamin C, and see the survival rates go way up.
It is inexpensive, but we can’t do that because...?
FOAD, NPR.
Not going to break my personal rule of NOT EVER reading or listening to NPR.
From another source I heard that only 15% survived once a ventilator was required. I am almost 70 and dont think I would accept a ventilator.
That’s not much different than anyone put on a ventilator. They are a last resort in any respiratory failure.
So in the British study, 33 out of 98 patients were discharged alive or just over 31%. That’s way better than without a ventilator when 0% would be.
There’s been a lot of these stories in the last 2-3 days and it seems that the idea is that it’s pointless to put them on the ventilator anyway. It’s a pretty clear case of priming the public for when the UK’s NHS (national health service) run out of ventilators, or the USA, or any other country. Don’t buy into the doom and gloom, it’s not 0%. It’s getting people to believe that being put on a ventilator is pointless which you even see in this thread. 31% odds are still better than 0%.
There are no panaceas in life. That would, by necessity, include ventilators.
It sounds more than invasive.
Surely there must be a better way to oxygenate.
Of course, gotta keep the fear up. We need ventilators or tens of thousands will die! What, ventilator production is catching up? Ventilators are not enough! Are you seeing it yet? This “pandemic” is all about fear and control.
Not true. It depends on the reason they were put on the vent but most people put on ventilators will be extubated successfully
It sounds more than invasive.
Shirley, there must be a better way to oxygenate.
