The economic fallout of government mandates meant to deal with the coronavirus pandemic is causing hospitals across the country to cut hours and furlough workers.
In Cincinnati, Ohio, a March 17 order from the Ohio Department of Health halted all nonessential surgeries in order to preserve personal protective equipment in hospitals. The financial ramifications were severe, and it's estimated that the surgery cancellations cost area hospitals $1.2 billion per month, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
That disruption has forced hospitals to cut back on hours and consider furloughs for hundreds of hospital workers. A spokeswoman for Mercy Health said that 700 employees will go on furlough that will last 30 to 90 days.
States across the country have issued similar orders and proclamations in accordance with guidance from the U.S. surgeon general requesting that hospitals limit elective surgeries amid coronavirus fears.

Bump
hospitals basically print money off of elective surgeries (orthopedics, cath lab, OBGYN) and the revenue that is derived downstream from procedures (lab tests, radiology, physician time)
I believe this ban is one of the biggest overreactions from the chinese virus so far.
I wonder what happens when an asymptomatic super spreader walks into a hospital for an elective surgery.
I’d imagine they have surgery.
“Asymptomatic super spreader”? Where do you lunatics come up with this stuff?
Its in the talking points.
You didn't manage to get "social distancing", "flattening the curve", and "Chinese bioweapon" into your post. You're slipping, Fearbro.
Wow...no wonder everyone over 55 seems to have a stent.
New York is hiring. Maybe they will provide living accommodations for out of town health care workers.
I am attest to the story. There are very few CV cases here in Cincinnati. 150+- in the county.
Many of the big hospitals are ghost towns. I drive by Jewish Hospital and Bethesda North daily.
Parking lots empty. Drive thru CV testing lanes empty with the exception of 3-5 guys dressed in hazmat suits sitting on empty plastic folding tables, waiting for someone to randomly drive up and want a test.
In the mean time, doctors and staffs that conduct elective orthopedic surgeries, ENT surgeries, cataract surgeries, etc have all been out of work. Whole outpatient hospitals in the county are shut down and doctors cant do anything. Such a waste.
I’ve wondered about that.
When you shut down all elective stuff.
And nobody is going to the ER unless it’s Corona.
Lots of folks without stuff to do.
My daughter works for an outfit that processes med claims, business is way down.
I wonder what happens when routine colonoscopies, breast-cancer screening, and other preventative health care measures are not done for months. Many people die of the cancers and health issues that aren't diagnosed.
I wonder how many of the folks trumpeting the societal shutdown are octogenarians living off retirement and/or Social Security who face no real hardships from the shutdown in an attempt to avoid their own personal risk. And lecture everyone else about being "selfish" in wanting to go back to work to provide for their families.
Have fun with The Apocalypse, Woody.
I’ll try to keep that in mind for next time, Flubro.

Not me. I’m 48, and running low on food. Anyway, here’s your broad brush back. Do keep painting.

At some point, people are going to stop listening to you nuts. Most normal people do NOT have the capacity to live in a constant state of fear and hysteria! You are not winning people to your cause, you are instead burning people out on your nonstop, insane hysteria.
Try acting like an adult!
How am I not acting like an adult, Artcore?
I’m a just a dude sitting in my house trying to figure out how and why my world blew up.
If you don’t want to listen to me, then don’t.
Asymptomatic super spreaders exist.
What happens when one of them walks into a hospital for elective surgery?
The answer is THEY SPREAD IT, ARTCORE!
Really? In IL, we’re getting periodic emergency broadcast system messages on our phones requesting that all licensed health care workers report to their facilities to assist with anything and everything.
I’m not sure if you’re a parent, but G_d help your kids if you are. If you were my dad, I’d have to cut off contact off for a while until you got a grip! Seriously, you sound like a DUmmie. Even when there’s an ounce of good news, you explain it away, and provide even more unhinged, hysterical doomer scenarios. How do you go through each day being this much of a hot mess?
Sorry, but try acting like a man instead of a sniveling weasel.
We can’t hide forever because of a bug, and most Americans are going to have limited patience being locked away at home while our economy crumbles because of this unhinged fear being fomented by our Fake News!
As an aside, I’ll wager we aren’t going to have anywhere near 100K deaths in the US from COVID-19.
I really feel sorry for you, that you are allowing this to ruin your life. That’s what’s sad here.
Sheer F’ing insanity. Remember if you support this shutdown, you support killing the USA and its people!
