Las Vegas Sands owner Sheldon Adelson was forced to close his doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, but he says he won’t allow that to destroy his employees.

“I’m paying every one of our nearly 10,000 employees as though they were still working. We’re even working to make up for lost tips. I hope to do that right up until the time that we can reopen our businesses,” Adelson explained.

I have never been to Vegas. I may now take a trip there next winter and stay as The Sands. I've always wanted to go to Vegas and was looking for the right excuse.

there’s lots of evil in vegas....but if you just go to play some silly games, and eat, and have a few drinks, and maybe take in a show, its a fun place...people are usually in a good happy mood and everybody is friendly....side trips to Hoover dam, the Pawn stars, the zip line in Fremont....you usually can afford to stay several days because during the week the hotels are cheap....

He owns the Venetian and Palazzo in Vegas, The Sands is the corporate name. There used to be a Sands back in the 60's or so.

I wonder if any of these employees would make more money by taking the unemployment stimulus instead.

The Sands is long gone. Sheldon bought it, tore it down, and built The Venetian.

I have some familial connections to the history of Vegas casinos. When Sheldon built The Venetian it came with a billion dollar price tag. He built a massive lobby that looks like the Sistine Chapel - and no slot machines in the lobby. The Vegas establishment all thought he was nuts and would go broke, breaking all the “rules”. Instead of course he’s uber wealthy.

Looks like he’s still breaking the “rules”. Good for him to do this. He can afford it but that’s not the issue. It’s also good business, good for morale. He will resume operations undisturbed - perhaps with an even more loyal group of employees - when he can reopen.

Edit: I see that they are being paid as if still employed, so they wouldn’t qualify for unemployment. Unless they quit. No way the system could check everyone to see if they willingly left employment right now.

Vegas Democrats HATE him because he “screws over the union” and donates to Republican causes.

They prefer MGM and Cassers which is union controlled.

Guess which resort employees aren’t getting paid?

OT and FWIW, I have a supplier who is having trouble keeping his people on staff. Half won’t show up because:
1) they get unemployment
2) they get the stimulus money
3) they are afraid of the virus.

Add it all up, and he is capacity constrained. He has business, he’s an essential business... but he can’t get half the people to show up and can’t supply his demand.

Isn’t the government promising to cover businesses that pay their employees salaries?

" I may now take a trip there next winter and stay as The Sands."

That will be hard to do... I was there (my 63rd birthday) when the Sands was imploded...{:-)

However, the Venetian, which rose up from the rubble, is a great place to stay...

There are plenty of cheap places to stay. The Venetian isn’t one of them. But you may catch a deal off-season or non-weekend in the months after we get through all this. I suspect bookings will take a long time to get back to full. Many of the high rollers are taking a beating in their businesses and portfolios.

The shopping mall attached to it connects to the sister hotel, and it has a river complete with gondolas you can ride through the mall. He spared no expense. It’s worth a visit just to marvel at what he built.
