Once again, these joint efforts saved lives. From 2014 to 2016, 28,000 people in West Africa contracted Ebola, far fewer than the 1.4 million the U.S. CDC had predicted near the beginning of the outbreak. In August 2014, 40 percent of Americans told pollsters that they expected a large outbreak of Ebola in the United States. Ultimately, only a single American died. On Obamas final trip to China in 2016, the two governments agreed to jointly finance a headquarters for the African Unions Centres for Disease Control and Prevention so that the continent could better fight infectious diseases itself.
The Trump administration is now trying to prevent that headquarters from being built. Thats just one example of the wrecking ball it has taken to public-health cooperation with Beijing. In 2018, The Washington Post reported that the Trump administration was dramatically downsizing the global epidemic prevention activities Obama had launched following the Ebola crisis. This year, even as the coronavirus outbreak was raging, Trump proposed cutting American funding for WHO in half.
These cuts have taken a particular toll on American initiatives in China. Since Trump took office, both the CDC and the National Institutes of Health have reduced their staff in Beijing. The National Science Foundation has shut its office in the country entirely. The sentiment inside the Trump administration, Bouey told me, is that if you have collaborative research with Chinese scientists, youre helping China to build their capacity, and thats not good for the U.S., because China is a strategic competitor.

Orange Man always bad. F these progressive globalists
Peter Beinart - absolute moron. Can he even understand what the dumbest person in the US can? CHINA is the reason for what is happening right now!
I forgot the word “Burning”...
“China has deadly consequences”
There, I fixed the headline!
“strategic competitor” .....well thats a polite way of putting it!!
Opening up China to the West-and their market for Saudi oil-was the price Nixon paid to KSA for the security of the Petro-Dollar
The Peotro-dollar presently is being laid in its grave....
China is sending contaminated (with Covid-19) test kits around the world, and used face masks.
Yes it does and everyone receiving it will be executed or imprisoned. The brass came out yesterday and they are not just going after drug dealers.
Over 150 countries have been devastated by this bug.
None of them are going to emerge with a whole lot of
sympathy for China.
If Beinart wants to pick the losing side let him.
My friend at work has received three separate packages of surgical masks from China, none of which she ordered. One came through the mail and the other two came through Amazon. Neither will give her any info, so she notified the FBI. they have all been pretty apathetic to her. Amazing
Why should US taxpayers fund the health of every country in the third world? Has it kept us safe? Not in the era of sloppy enforcement of laws against illegal aliens. We should have spent those tens of billions of dollars on border enforcement.
Feds need to investigate the journalist and politicians that display pro China bias. Find out if theyre taking $$$$.
Also need to ban ANY politician or government worker from taking Chinese money for ten years. Dont need former Speakers or the house taking bribe money a year out of office as we have now.
This year, even as the coronavirus outbreak was raging, Trump proposed cutting American funding for WHO in half.
Hopefully next year he go’s for all of it!
Trump is not writing off China. His trade deals are on and he has indicated he and Jinpin are on working terms. The globalists, who are behind the pandemic, want China and the U.S. at each others throats, in a war, or on waring terms.
IIRC, most if not all of this rag is owned by the Emerson Collective.
Nuff said.
I saw “The Atlantic” - say no more.
China stooge
