WASHINGTON - The U.S. Navy on Wednesday did not rule out punishing the captain of the Theodore Roosevelt carrier who wrote a scathing letter to Navy leadership asking for stronger measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus.
“I don’t know who leaked the letter to the media. That would be something that would violate the principles of good order and discipline, if he were responsible for that. But I don’t know that,” Acting U.S. Navy Secretary Thomas Modly said when asked multiple times if the captain would be punished.
“The fact that he wrote the letter up to his chain of command to express his concerns would absolutely not result in any type of retaliation,” Modly said.
Modly added that he did not agree with the captain that all but 10 percent of the ship’s crew could be removed.

When I first read the letter I thought he was not suited to command. He had the ability to isolate the sailor who were sick, he sounded like an over emotional wreck and that is NOT what you want in charge of a war ship.
They need to find out how it was leaked to the press.
If he had a mentor he trusted, talking over a secure line, he could have fleshed out a plan on the qt.
So The Chinese basically sunk one of our carriers
If he leaked it outside the chain of command, he should be removed.

It’s still an ObamaNavy. Takes time to rule out the managers - not leaders.
However, this Captain has every right and obligation to express his recommendations to the leadership. I expressed strong opinions to my military superiors many times - but always obeyed the commands that resulted. It most certainly did not hurt my career.
The leakage? Gotta be someone with no trustability. Refer to the first sentence at the top of this post.

Who is responsible for the security of special weapons on a carrier? Is there a Marine unit that does that sort of physical security?

No. Its in port for repairs is a more accurate analogy.
You sink one its never coming back. Given the proper context they will easily come back from this.
The also got one Russian nuclear sub and only lost one of theirs - 545 a type 54 I think
I’m thinking they have the whole aircraft repair deck just below the flight deck. Cordon off, set up beds, ship in medical staff and equipment. If anyone gets critical, fly them off. Non-critical cases will heal in time. Meantime put all available crew on disinfectant duty.
He messed up royally. Will be busted out.

The letter was fine. The LEAK needs to be punished severely. Seeing as the letter was signed but not serialized, the leak came from onboard the ship. The CO is responsible for everyone and everything on the ship, so he will pay a price for the leak. He might never see a star. The actual leaker should face Court Martial.
Yes. Every Carrier has a Marine Detachment that provides such security. They drill regularly and you’d best not be in their way when they launch into one of their drills.
