400 ventilators arrive in Michigan for COVID-19 patients

Detroit is emerging as a trouble spot for coronavirus cases.

President Donald Trump said help is on the way. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said hundreds of ventilators arrived Tuesday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The Army Corps of Engineers has been hard at work inside the TCF Center. They anticipate having nearly 1,000 beds ready by April 9.

Whitmer has tweeted pictures of more than 400 ventilators that have come into Michigan from the Strategic National Stockpile.

Why does Minnesota with very roughly half the population of Michigan have 1/10 of the cases?

Michigan has a total population of just under 10 million.

Not to downplay the deaths, but to provide some perspective.

Michigan blue collar state. Lot of smokers and obesity.
I went to the Woodward Dream cruise couple of years back. Never so many morbidly obese people in one setting.

That works out to about 26 per 1 million population (population 9.95 million). That compares to Virginia at 3.95 per million (population 8.59 million). So far the death rate in Virginia is about one sixth that of Michigan and Herr Northam is going full totalitarian, with virtual house arrest for the state until June 10 (one day after the scheduled Virginia Republican Party Convention).

Never so many morbidly obese people in one setting.

So true. And you almost never catch them standing either.

It’s also Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties.

The hot spot seems to be centered on Talib’s Congressional District.

There have to be reasons beyond just “Detroit”.

My guess is the big Muslim population there in Detroit. Just like New York was from mostly the Muslims bringing it there.

Just a guess though and not based on any facts I have seen.

That’s my working theory but it would be fun to pin it on Gov. [half] Whitmer.

NY has about 2,000 deaths, which is close to half the US total.

No other state is even in that ballpark.

NJ is closest with 355 deaths.

Obesity in at least the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is viewed as winter insulation for the 9 months of winter, 1 month of spring, 1 month of summer and 1 month of autumn.
