FLORENCE - In the storm of infection and death sweeping Italy, one big community stands out to health officials as remarkably unscathed - the 50,000 ethnic Chinese who live in the town of Prato.
Two months ago, the countrys Chinese residents were the target of what Amnesty International described as shameful discrimination.
But in the Tuscan town of Prato, home to Italys biggest single Chinese community, the opposite has been true. Once scapegoats, they are now held up by authorities as a model for early, strict adoption of infection-control measures.
Ethnic Chinese make up about a quarter of Pratos population, built originally around the textile industry, went into lockdown from the end of January, three weeks before Italys first recorded infection.
Many were returning from new year holidays in China, the then epicenter.
They knew what was coming and spread the word: stay home.
So as Italians headed to the ski slopes and crowded into cafes and bars as normal, the Chinese inhabitants of Prato had seemingly disappeared. Its streets, still festooned with Chinese New Year decorations, were semi-deserted, shops shuttered.
When Chinese-born businessman Luca Zhou flew home from China on Feb. 4 to rejoin his wife and 28-year-old son in Prato, he put himself straight into quarantine in his bedroom for 14 days, separated from his wife and son.
We had seen what was happening in China and we were afraid for ourselves, our families and our friends, said the 56-year-old, who has a business exporting Italian wine to China.
After emerging from his self-quarantine, he ventured outside in mask and gloves. He said the few other Chinese on the streets also wore them, anxious not to spread the virus to others.

That’s racist!
My they (Reuters) is that shameless, aren’t they?
Meant to say they (Reuters) “are” that shameless.
Geez, what a totally bullsh*t piece this is...really unbelievable these morons thing anyone with 2 functioning brain cells would buy this.
It was China that gave them the virus.
Looks like the Chicoms bought them, too.
Good God, people dropping like flies in Italy because China hid the pandemic until they no longer could. But the media says the Chinese are the heroes in all this. And nobody pushes back, we have become serfs.
al Reuters bowing to their Chinese Communist Party overlords.
It was probably China that gave Reuters the article.
Xinhua-Reuters
China’s investment in Reuters and other MSM outlets is really paying off!
Exactly. The Chinese returning from CNY holiday knew the Wuhan Virus was deadly. Based on the comments on this threat, I'm not sure what others gather from this article (I had to heavily edit to keep under 300 words). Reuters inadvertently lays out the timeline.
Does these Chinese have that famous herd immunity I keep hearing so much about? lol.
Reuters, just worthless ChiCom stooges.
Hey, what else is new?
Just like Government.
Cause a problem, let it run its course, ‘uncause’ the problem and you suddenly realize how much you ‘need’ them. OR NOT.
Order you to ‘stay home’. Empty the jails for (they say) ‘humanitarian reasons’ when IN ACTUALITY they are making room for those that DARE defy their orders.
Wait a short (Until there is a run on tar, feathers and pitchforks) rescind the order and release all the scofflaws promising that the record will ‘go away’.
NOW the masses will LOVE the govt for releasing them from their grip.
During the Okinawa ‘Invasion’ the natives were running off cliffs committing suicide because the Japanese had ‘promised’ them that if the Americans/Allies landed, ALL would be raped and killed or worse. (Reportedly Japanese troops killed some of the Okinawan’s that wouldn’t commit suicide)
Another Puff-Piece in a series of the Chinese Charm Propaganda Campaign. They expect the world to lick this spittle up and love them for the great things they do for the world.
