If he had done nothing at all, President Donald Trump said Tuesday, the American death toll from the coronavirus would be geometrically higher than the low six-figure count he now expects.
In other words, it could have been worse.
Looking like he'd been visited by the ghosts of hometown past and election future, Trump deviated from his typically ebullient, brash and optimistic style to deliver a somber message much more in line with that of his leading scientists.
In doing so, a president who played down the threat of the virus for weeks, mocked critics who urged him to take it more seriously and publicly agonized over his decision to advise Americans to stay home landed again in the unusual-for-him position of readying the public for a terrible outcome.
Trump's abrupt shifts in tone are something Americans have become accustomed to as little more than theatrics - he previously did a day of real talk on March 16, only to revert to his old self after the stock market plunged. But Tuesday's change reflected an undeniable political reality: He can't afford to blow sunshine at the public as a plague forces unthinkable choices about who lives and who dies.
Both his legacy and his re-election hopes are likely to be defined by how he handles this crisis, and the judgment will be harsh if he appears to be deeply out of touch with public sentiment.
Trump seems to understand that he can't will the disease into submission or convince the public that tens or hundreds of thousands of deaths aren't that bad.
He's right that he did more than nothing to fight the disease. His critics believe he did next to nothing. He has to hope the public believes it would have been worse without him.

Strange, isn’t it, how neither the fat one nor his colleagues in the “press” have asked Joe Biden about his own staffer’s public claim that she was raped by the presidential candidate? This despite the fact that she was on his Senate staff so she is not a political enemy of his, that she told the HR office on Capitol Hill at the time, and that she described how it happened contemporaneously with the rape to friends. A bit stronger evidence that Justice Kavanaugh, wouldn’t you say? But look at the difference between the tiger press then and not even a pussycat press with Biden. H’mm, wonder why?

nothing speaks to the fact FakeNewsMSM & the Dems don’t really believe the panDEMic is as scary as they claim more than their continued irrational attacks on the President, and their crowding together like sheep at the White House press briefings.
Gee, I wonder if this fellow has been checking the Media Party’s poll numbers? Seems he and his brethren are well underwater as far as trust and respect from most people are concerned while emergency and other frontline workers and Trump and Pence are well, well ahead.

Trump is being asked to prove a negative, why isn’t the death toll at ‘0’! His opponent want us to forget all previous history of die-hard political/social/media opposition and impeachment that was a constant in the past year. They want us to forget the source of this contagion and that it was and is authoritarian regime that lies to all about nearly everything involved with this disease.
Trump’s response needs to keep highlighting the time-line and the actions and words of his opponents at every step. He must not let them frame this gotcha as an all or nothing, as ‘0’ deaths with someone else were in the Oval Office. The grass may be greener on the other side of the road BUT when the opposition has built a wall there, they must be forced to admit it.

Jonathan Allen is a neutral observer, an objective journalist.Pay no attention to the historical record which assuredly must say that Jonathan Allen was all impeachment, all the time, back in the era when it woulda been wonderful if the Administration had gone full bore on CV-19.

Considering the abysmal performance of New York City\State compared to almost every other state Andrew Cuomo should be a “Dead Man Walking” politically.
I’ll say it over and over again. Trump support is set in concrete. He hasn’t and won’t lose votes over this.
