BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A large earthquake struck north of Boise, Idaho, Tuesday evening, with people across a large area reporting shaking.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports the magnitude 6.5 temblor struck just before 5 p.m. It was centered 73 miles (118 kilometers) northeast of Meridian, Idaho, near the rural mountain town of Stanley.
Marcus Smith, an emergency room health unit coordinator at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center, said the hospital, about 65 miles (104 kilometers) south of the epicenter, shook but the quake didn’t interfere with the treatment of any patients. The hospital in Blaine County is on the front line of Idaho’s coronavirus outbreak, in a region with the highest per-capita rates of known COVID-19 cases in the nation outside of New York City and surrounding counties.

I was sitting at my desk in the basement watching a Covid-19 presentation online when I felt a gentle rocking motion. I though it was me. A few moments later the alert came announcing the quake. I had briefly considered that when I felt the rocking but them I thought “Nah, I’m not in Alaska anymore”.
There was another one about 4 years ago. The epicenter was just a few miles away on the bottom of Lake Pend O’Reille. That one was pretty obvious.
We got about 5 inches of snow today too. What an interesting world!
We felt it in the panhandle...lasted a long time. Having recently migrated from California I’d thought we’d gotten away from these. :-)

Stanley is likely closer to the better known “Sun Valley”.

yep, we woke up to snow on the ground and later, hale....plus thrown in the earthquake, it was a trifecta....
Starting to think with all the problems in the world, there is something spiritual going on here. IMHO
My brothers family live in Meridian, ID. They got quite a good shaking from the initial quake and some shimmy’s from the after shocks.
So far, there’s no damage.

I grew up 17 miles from the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake. The town we most recently lived in before coming to Idaho has at least four major faults in the area. The San Andreas runs along the western side and the town and the Calaveras and Sargent faults run right through town. The USGS has field trips to the town because of the level and visible signs of earthquake activity.
I give that background not to diminish the magnitude of the quake here in Idaho (it was pretty darn big, and if it’d been centered in a more populated area it would have been devastating), but rather to highlight why this surprised me. We come from a place that is the epicenter of magnitude 3/4 earthquakes monthly. Apparently Idaho is the fifth most earthquake “active” state after California, Alaska, Nevada, and Utah. Now I know! :-)
