'I feel nothing': virus-stricken Wuhan buries its dead

Wuhan (China) (AFP) - As China's coronavirus epicentre Wuhan awakens from its long nightmare, formerly locked-down citizens are beginning to reemerge, but for many, their first outdoor act in more than two months is grim: burying loved ones.

At the Biandanshan Cemetery, downcast groups of masked residents filed quietly past hazmat-suit-wearing security personnel and police on Tuesday to lay friends and relatives to rest under a leaden sky, a scene repeated in recent days at Wuhan's graveyards.

Whether from coronavirus or other causes of death, Wuhan's gradual re-opening in recent days has offered the first chance in weeks for the dead to be buried, and for the bereft to vent over what one called a "hellish" experience for the city.

Grim-faced, many declined to speak to journalists, but one woman arriving for a family member's burial expressed numbness.

"I don't feel anything," she said blankly.

Her relative had died of a stroke.

She gave no further details, but many of Wuhan's 11 million residents have complained online of uninfected loved ones dying from other causes due to a lack of medical care during the epidemic, which overwhelmed the city's hospitals.

- 'No family left' -

One man with a box of ashes said he was a community worker tasked with burying another man who "had no family left".

If they stopped eating bats, dogs, cats, rats etc. this would not have happened. Now their virus has wrecked havoc on the rest of the world. What is the rest of the world going to do about their wet markets when we finally get over this virus?

Boycott China.

What’s the rest of the world going to do?

Probably nothing.

The rest of the world is easily blackmailed by China.

Tienanmen Square pretty much went down the rabbit hole. As if it never happened, and it was the biggest story in the world for about two months back in 1989.

The article states very clearly that NOT ALL OF THESE PEOPLE DIED FROM CORONAVIRUS!

The lady interviewed had her relative die of a STROKE!

Joseph Goebbels to the MAX on this one!

A picture is worth a thousand words so is it with this one. China declared the Wuhan Virus controlled and gone from China. Then why are there security personnel in full hazmat gear at the front of the cemetary? The Wuhan Virus?

“Boycott China.”

I agree. It’s not easy, but is an effort we should make. I bought a Dewalt item the other day that was made in Israel. Almost all competing products were made in China.

Poor people.

A moment of silent prayer or contemplation, please?

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

We are experiencing that now with my Wife. She wants to move her appointment up to have something check out that could be serious. They will not move it up. I hope they do not cancel it.

If a person has a stroke or heart attack when the hospital is overrun by an epidemic, they could die. I wonder if that should be rated as virus related.

There are reports were people are still being turn back from the hospital, they are still loaded up with sick people.

Honest to goodness about two weeks ago some national broadcaster (NBC?) did a story on this poor fellow who died of Coronavirus. His half weeping widow was interviewed.

And then they got to the details and showed the guys picture. Turns out the guy was 300+ pounds, had high blood pressure, was diabetic, and had an underlying heart issue. The guy was an absolute walking TIME BOMB, but he died of COVID-19 according to the story lead in.

“The lady interviewed had her relative die of a STROKE! Joseph Goebbels to the MAX on this one!”

I’m not sure anyone claimed that there wouldn’t be other deaths while Coronavirus was causing hospitals to overflow.

...unless I missed something?

Too bad, you cruel vicious torturers of animals. Not only did you lose your loved ones, but you caused the world to lose their loved ones in multiples of yours, destroyed businesses and caused the rest of us to live very restricted lives in constant fear of catching your virus. Somebody hand me down my tiny violin.

That’s called Shock, lady. You’ll feel PLENTY, soon enough.

God bless her. Poor lady.

My late great-uncle was recorded as a tobacco death statistic by New York State because he chewed snuff.

He was 94 at the time.

No offense, but by your logic anyone who dies of anything in the foreseeable future would be counted as a coronavirus death.

“No offense, but by your logic anyone who dies of anything in the foreseeable future would be counted as a coronavirus death.”

Many would have been treatable, but they’re out of luck due to the FluBros. The proper way to account for Coronavirus deaths is to simply compare the number of people who die in a given time period, versus the number that died a year ago in that same time period. Deaths are almost always tabulated properly, while anything else is subjective.
