TIJUANA/CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico - The worlds busiest land border has fallen quiet as restrictions to contain the coronavirus prevent millions of Mexicans from making daily trips north, including many who work in U.S. businesses.
At least 4 million Mexicans residing in cities along the 1,954-mile (3,144-km) border have been hit hard by the restrictions on non-essential travel. The measures effectively invalidate visas allowing short crossings into U.S. cities to visit family, get medical care or shop.
While such B1/B2 border crossing cards are officially recreational, Reuters spoke to nearly two dozen residents of Tijuana, Nogales and Ciudad Juarez who use their cards to reach jobs or to care for relatives on the U.S. side of the frontier.
All said they could no longer make the crossing, dealing another blow to businesses already suffering from shutdowns on the U.S. side of the border, including vital industries like agriculture.
I dont know what Im going to do without money. Im just waiting for a miracle, said 28-year-old Rosario Cruz, a mother of two young children who works for a cleaning company that subcontracts with major retailers in California.
The coronavirus restrictions prohibit all non-essential travel across the border. However, the restrictions have not been widely imposed on U.S. citizens traveling to Mexico.

Roid-ers drumming up some compassion, we don’t care
My heart bleeds.
“I dont know what Im going to do without money. Im just waiting for a miracle,
Very unfortunate for her and I sympathize, but if I recall correctly Mexico / Mexicans were demanding the border be shut-down last week to prevent US citizens from coming into Mexico.
Sorry, but you can’t have both ways. Make up your mind, Mexico. Either we shut-down both sides of the border or we leave it open.
Keep building the wall in the meantime.
Car parts, stolen and new.....
May they all be barred forever.
One can only dream of a ‘Great Wall of China’ on the US southern border....../s
The Mexicans are barring themselves from crossing, as many of them are hanging back so as not to be “contaminated” by contact with those loathsome disease-bearing Americans.
Fear is a powerful motivator. Next thing you know, the MEXICANS will be devoting efforts to build a wall barrier from their side, to keep the gringos out.
I dont know what Im going to do without money. Im just waiting for a miracle, said 28-year-old Rosario Cruz,..”
She’ll figure it out, if she hasn’t already.
The ‘Great Wall of Trump.’
Notice the meme of the DemocRATS and their Media "We are Virtuous Because we LOVE Immigrants". It's virtue signalling at its finest. But all you have to do is to complete the Meme to see its downfall. "We are Virtuous Because we LOVE Immigrants OVER AMERICANS".
Take the DemocRATs stance on the Border while the virus rages. They want it Open but Americans to be under lockdown. What huh??
Pelosi wanted Immigrants to get Stimulus Funds while trying to deny loans to American Businesses. Say What??
Their Virtue signalling is Against Americans if you've noticed. And this is during an Election Year.
The DemocRATs have always been able to "tack to the middle" for as long as I remember. That has been the way they get past the repugnance of Americans on how they really stand. This year it is going to be different.
So get out your Popcorn and bring snacks. The train wreck which is the DemocRAT Party is barreling down the tracks at high speed. And it looks like it won't be able to slow down.
You have the means to grow your own food in your climate. You should want for nothing. Tell your government to stop keeping you poor and do some real reform.
Agreed. I’d feel better about Trump’s ability to rebuild after this if I didn’t see Fauci and Birx force-feeding him their models.
Or Minuchin (Sec. of Goldman and Skull and Bones) up there.
But I do like seeing Navarro with an expanded role.
What businesses? The fear-mongering MSM has succeeded in ginning up enough hysteria to shut down the world economy. No travel, no restaurants, no small businesses, no theaters, no sporting events, no concerts.
About the northern half of Mexico is Chihuahuan Desert. Not great farm land. The people who live along the border are entirely dependent on the US economy.
The Silver Lining.
“The measures effectively invalidate visas allowing short crossings into U.S. cities to visit family, get medical care or shop.”
One of these things is not like the others.
I'm willing to pay more for avocados, and miss out on vacations in Cancun,in order to see that happen.
And none of those things involves working for pay.
Welcome to FR, by the way.
Thanks, been a long-time lurker. Being cooped up at home gives me time to join the conversation.
