Donald Trump has extended Americas national shutdown for a month, bowing to public health experts, and scientific reality, and warning that the worst of the coronavirus pandemic is yet to come.
Speaking in the White House Rose Garden, the US president claimed that, if his administration keeps the death toll to 100,000, it will have done a very good job a startling shift from his optimistic predictions of a few days ago when he said he hoped to restart the economy by Easter.
Trump also undermined his plea for unity by uttering falsehoods, verbally abusing reporters and making incendiary allegations that implied health care workers were stealing masks, without providing evidence.
The extended deadline marked a humiliating retreat for the president who, having squandered six precious weeks at the start of the pandemic, more recently complained that the cure is worse than the problem and floated Easter Sunday as a beautiful timeline for reopening big swathes of the country.
On Sunday he claimed this had only been aspirational as his advisers urged him not to move too hastily. He announced the initial 15-day period of social distancing urged by the federal government, which was due to expire on Monday, would be extended to 30 April, and said he hoped normality might return by 1 June.
The guidelines recommend against big group gatherings and urge older people and anyone with existing health problems to stay at home. People were also urged to work at home when possible and avoid restaurants, bars, non-essential travel and shopping trips.
The modelling estimates that the peak in death rate is likely to hit in two weeks, Trump told reporters, with the toll already at more than 2,400.

Dr. Fauci said, when asked if we could expect millions of deaths that no, he expected closer to 100,000-200,000 deaths.
What a load.
Trump also undermined his plea for unity by uttering falsehoods,
Just the kind worthless BS one expects from The Gaurdian.
That’s actually true. The flu carried away 80,000 people last year, and it’s already endemic to the population, meaning everyone has been exposed and many have immunity. Whereas this bug is brand new, very infectious, and clogs ICUs with just a fraction of the population exposed to it.
The Guardian needs to worry about their toilet of a country that is now a colony.
I can just hear Nancy P. And others now, who will twist this around, that Trump is willing to see 100,000 people die to prop up the economy and stock market. And continue the narrative that Trump has mismanaged everything, and he’s willing to have 100,000 people’s blood on his hands.
And they wonder why it’s called Fake News.
Maybe so, but I don’t see it going that high.
We’ll see.
Folks who think they don’t stink when they use the potty.
on those kind of questions, dont give them an answer...
a reporter asked Trump how many deaths he would accept and he said ‘none’. id be insulted if asked that question... it assumes it would be ok with some.
The truth will be something under 50,000 or possibly even 15,000.
This whole thing is so overblown.
In proportion to population, 100,000 deaths in the USA equates to about 22,000 in the UK. Don’t expect any of the MSM to use per/people metrics when country-to-country comparisons cast the USA in the worst possible light.
I hate the left.
This has been debunked already. His words taken out of context. Brits have become quite the jerks lately.
agreed. No way the death rate gets near that number!
Trumps brilliant. Hes using this figure on purpose. If we end up with 10 percent, people will think consciously or unconsciously that it wasnt that bad. We have the right president for this time in history.
Exactly! Trumps setting himself up for a win!!!
Good point.
