We're All Germophobes Now

After 9/11, life in America changed in significant ways. Assumptions of our safety and security were shaken to their roots. Our behavior and our beliefs were greatly modified.

Air travel was completely transformed, as well as security measures in our buildings, sporting events, and schools. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and its sub-agency, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) were created. Our freedoms and privacy were negatively altered with the introduction of the Patriot Act. Our heightened fear resulted in increased government authority.

What will our post-Wuhan world look like? When we emerge from our erstwhile sanctuaries like nuclear war survivors coming out of their bomb shelters, will everything appear the same, or will it be a barren, post-apocalyptic landscape (metaphorically speaking, of course)? A lot depends on how long our self-imposed national quarantine continues.

We are witnessing another 9/11-esque event, with economic structures crumbling in slow-motion all over the country. When we wander through our towns in the aftermath, many of our favorite shops and restaurants will be gone. Our personal situations, investments, and incomes will be negatively impacted.

No matter what happens at this point, some things will never be the same. For one, we are all transforming into germophobes. This will result in numerous cascading effects in our lives.

Our collective consciousness on personal hygiene and cleanliness has been permanently raised. Most of us are experiencing a heightened awareness and an altered kinetic feedback effect toward shaking hands, touching our face, licking our fingers, and “social distancing”.

Hand sanitizers will likely be standard accessories in homes and automobiles from this point on into the future. Sanitizing wipes will be used more frequently. Our motor learning reflexes have been re-tuned to urge us to wash our hands more often,

No.

Just no.

There are more ‘germs’ living on/in/around you than you can ever sanitize, or should sanitize.

Sure, practice good hygiene, but be sensible.

Food borne pathogens will forever be a greater threat, and sadly nosocomial infections from hospitalizations.

Yawn.

I didn’t participate in the panic, and have never been particularly a germaphobe.

I do wash my hands a lot, but I do things that can get them sticky and I have acidic skin which itches if coated with mud or something.

I’m no germophobe. Never have been; never will be.

Not me. When I was getting my BS in Microbiology, one of the professors made the point that half of us would turn into germophobes, and the other half would see just how much is out there and decide not to care. I went the non-germophobe route.

Want to live longer? Do not live in big cities, and stay out of hospitals.

You’d have to move to the moon to get away from viruses and germs. And then you’d be trapped. The microbes will find you. It’s better to be exposed and have your immune system fight it. The human body is a miracle.

Germaphobes seem to not understand that we have an immune system that usually does quite fine as long as we have reasonable standards of personal hygiene and community hygiene. What I’m concerned about is the germaphobe-nazis who will impose germaphobe standards on individuals and society. Our country will be one big snowflake awaiting the next assault on our weakness. Essentially, freedom will be gone “for the better good”. Pathetic.

I keep thinking of Adrian Monk, the fictional detective, trying to solve a case in today’s San Francisco.

I agree with the above.

It's ain't rocket science. New York is a disease haven. Los Angeles is too but they all drive around in cars, not sniffly, sneezy subways.

And the MERS thing grows happily in hospitals, no?

The big breakouts in the world have all been around highly populated areas. Human beings, even all animals, are not meant to live crowded but the germs love it.

They would weaken everyone’s immune systems in their quest for cleanliness. Typically, making matters worse, not better.

But, by the same token, it would be 'business as usual' for germaphobes. 😉
