Singapore (AFP) - A fresh bid to overturn a Singapore law banning gay sex failed Monday as a court dismissed several challenges, a setback for efforts to promote greater LGBT rights in Asia.
Inherited from the British colonial era, the law is rarely enforced but campaigners say it nevertheless jars with the affluent city-state's increasingly modern and vibrant culture.
Others however argue that Singapore remains at heart conservative and is not ready for change, while officials also believe most would not be in favour of repealing the legislation.
The latest attempt to overturn the law was spearheaded by three people -- a retired doctor, a DJ and an LGBT rights advocate -- who lodged court challenges seeking to prove the law is unconstitutional.
But the High Court dismissed all three after hearing them together behind closed doors, ruling the law does not violate articles of the constitution regarding equality and freedom of speech.
The court also found the fact the legislation was not enforced did not "render it redundant".
A first challenge to the law was dismissed in 2014. The repeated failure to overturn it contrasts sharply with progress made elsewhere in the region on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.

Just don’t spit on the street.
Or spray paint peoples’ cars....................
Bring back the Buggery Act of 1533...
Just a fine, they don't even get caned. But some of them would probably enjoy the first few strokes anyway.
I was on business there not long after that happened. Getting your backside vandalized for vandalizing somebody’s car seemed appropriate.
I bet he don’t do THAT again!.............
I may get to go to Singapore in the near future.......business...................
“Getting your backside vandalized for vandalizing somebodys car seemed appropriate.”
I did have some sympathy for the kid - it wasn’t his idea to live in Singapore, and his parents were probably trained by Dr. Spock, so he never got a spanking when he needed it, growing up. So he acted like any of Dr. Spock’s kids and raised hell.

Don't know the parent's specific situation, but generally the company posting them there will give the entire family some cultural training which points out stuff like this in advance. So it is not like he didn't know. He just didn't care and thought he could get away with it.
“Inherited from the British colonial era, the law is rarely enforced but campaigners say it nevertheless jars with the affluent city-state’s increasingly modern and vibrant culture. “
That is a giant half-truth amounting to a lie. Why? It ignores facts. While the British did rule Singapore for some time, and after WWII there was a smooth transition from British colonial rule to Singapore self-government, it is also true that Singapore’s traditional social norms, like most all of Asia’s traditional social norms, is very conservative.
I believe that whatever Singapore “inherited” from Britain, in law, with respect to LGBT issues was not seen as an imposition going against the traditional social norms of the society of Singapore.
And somebody explain to me why an anti-anal-penetration law "jars with the affluent city-state's increasingly modern and vibrant culture."
Anal penetration for fun and profit is as "modern" as the early Bronze Age (at least) and "vibrant" as a wiggling bevy of retroviruses.

I’m sure there was an element of that - but even with cultural training, that will not get an average American parent anywhere near the level of an average Singapanese parent...who won’t take crap from their kids, for any reason.
What does one get caned for in Singapore?
