A choir decided to go ahead with rehearsal. Now dozens of members have COVID-19 and two are dead

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — With the coronavirus quickly spreading in Washington state in early March, leaders of the Skagit Valley Chorale debated whether to go ahead with weekly rehearsal.

The virus was already killing people in the Seattle area, about an hour’s drive to the south.

But Skagit County hadn’t reported any cases, schools and business remained open, and prohibitions on large gatherings had yet to be announced.

On March 6, Adam Burdick, the choir’s conductor, informed the 121 members in an email that amid the “stress and strain of concerns about the virus,” practice would proceed as scheduled at Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church.

“I’m planning on being there this Tuesday March 10, and hoping many of you will be, too,” he wrote.

Sixty singers showed up. A greeter offered hand sanitizer at the door, and members refrained from the usual hugs and handshakes.

“It seemed like a normal rehearsal, except that choirs are huggy places,” Burdick recalled. “We were making music and trying to keep a certain distance between each other.”

After 2 1/2 hours, the singers parted ways at 9 p.m.

Nearly three weeks later, 45 have been diagnosed with COVID-19 or ill with the symptoms, at least three have been hospitalized, and two are dead.

Definition of geezer is like that famous definition of how porn and obscenity is different than art. You know it when you see it.

You know a “geezer” when you see one.

Very true. Not saying the slightest thing is wrong with geezer choirs. But its not a good idea for them to meet up just now.

What age does someone become a geezer?

The moment someone thinks a person in their 40s is a kid, a young'un, a whippersnapper. And means it!

What age does one become a geezer?

I would say over 65-70!

Please have even a modicum of respect for those who succumbed.

I have respect for those who have succumbed.

I have little respect for this article.

“Some things are more important than our entertainment.”

You know what we’re discovering with this “shelter in place” type of “shutdown”? We’re discovering how much our lives were filled with frivolous activities - all sorts of inane entertainment, addictive shopping, in other words, escapism.

Not being much of a social animal, I can’t say that I miss most of that. I miss not being able to get together with my kids and grandkids, but we still manage to get together via video and “drive bys”.

I understand the impact on the economy, but again it shows just how much of our economy is made up of frivolous stuff.

but a large number of folks get it just by being in same room with infected- who spew it into the air by breathing and sneezing

You're right.

"Experts said the choir outbreak is consistent with a growing body of evidence that the virus can be transmitted through aerosols — particles smaller than 5 micrometers that can float in the air for minutes or longer."

We wear N95 masks and gloves when we go anywhere. Despite others who argue with us that masks are not necessary (fools). We're seniors who protect our health. Let others who don't wear masks die, it's on them.

Yes. But a number of them developed symptoms on the same day, apparently, and called around to each other to report , from what I gather from the article.

Then they shouldn’t hang out with one another!

I am a Washingtonian. Lived in this commie state all my life.. The socialism has no rubbed off on me yet.. I am an old geezer at 72.. Hope I don’t get this stuff.. Inslee would let you die. He is on one of those Obama panels..

“Interesting is about half showed up for the rehearsal. 50% stayed home.”

How are those 50% doing? This is an accidental control group.

masks keep a person from touching their faces, their noses and mouth to be specific- gotta practice not touching the rest of your face too to be as safe as possible, if we can do that then masks absolutely are helpful as they will stop the person breathing in particle- the o nly real danger is when removing them- but folks should remove them by grabbing the strings- not the mask itself- and wash hands immediately after-

When wearing a masks, about the only place the virus can get it is around the bridge of nose, but that is greatly reduced by the mask, and around the eyes- but if you wear glasses- you’ll be protected somewhat there too- but we should wash our glasses after being out and around other folks, and hands too at same time-

Stay safe- looks l ike FDA has approved the drug that is working now without having to go through trials- so that’;s good news if we should end up with it- hopefully smaller hospitals will have access to it- aND we can get started really conquering this nasty virus-

They stayed at home because they weren't feeling well. Something about having a sore throat, etc. /s

HINT: It's not a control group unless it's a double-blind experiment in which the members of the control group are chosen by the researcher using some random process.

“[[Nearly three weeks later, 45 have been diagnosed with COVID-19]]

Well they can’t tell if they got it from that church gathering then- 3 weeks is a long time- all those folks could have gotten it shopping for food, or eating out or whatever- no way to tell i don’t think if they all got sick at the rehearsal?” by Bob434

I absolutely believe they got it there, Bob.

The one thing they all have in common is that they were all at choir practice.

It doesnt seem like they live very near each other. Nobody else in the area (as far as we could know) had it at the time. The people who weren’t there did not end up getting sick.

Dont fall for the old detective’s curse. That means looking too deep into it and missing the simple answer that was right under your nose (no pun intended)

I hope those that are borderline about the seriousness of this virus read this article. It is an eye opener. Just one practice for 2hrs resulted with one heck of a spread, especially with the precautions they took.

Stay healthy Bob, along with all my fellow freepers!

practically every other doc is saying it is airborne and easily caught- and that particles can stay i n air for up to 3 hours- whether we touch our faces or not- just walking through a cloud of virus will end up giving a person the virus as they breath it in-

If particles can stay in the air for 3 hours, what would be the point of being 6 feet apart? If I went to the store, and someone who had CV was there an hour ago, and I am in the aisle completely alone, can I still get it?

If someone was walking towards me in the distance but moved away as we got closer, and I then walked where he was, does it matter that we were never closer than 6 feet?

Sad story😪. This is why we have to wait, and stay in our homes. We are still learning about this disease/bio weapon.

Prayers for all of the choir members and their families.

Pray for our nation to be healed.

When wearing a mask ...

I'm not concerned about total protection, there are no guarantees in life. But some protection is better than none. N95 refers to 95 percent. I could also wear a full-face shield that I use when working with some power tools. Also a dual-filter chemical mask that I also use. Maybe my welding mask (electronic so a clear viewing glass unless welding). But that is all too extreme. For the brief times we go out shopping for necessities, N95 masks and disposable gloves are pretty good protection versus having nothing. And despite admonitions to stay 6 feet from others, plenty of people do intrude on your space when out.

I read FR for information and I found this interesting.

But I'm remain committed to the idea that individuals have the right to make decisions and should be free.

The Framers did not know about this virus but they knew about plagues. Still they added a Bill Of Rights to recognize inalienable rights and protect our freedom.

Now some decisions don't turnout well. Some have made my work harder. I see many claims about this virus - some made with great certainty. Our knowledge seems to be changing - but some discoveries might not be correct.

In my experience most public health estimates and projections wildly miss their mark. Suspicion is being used to make determinations. And that is problematic.

I'm sorry reality is tough for you. Would you have preferred the press not report what happened or sanitize it and say they're not certain how so many people in one choir got it or pretend they did not know each other or perhaps want the press to state that the sickness and the 2 deaths are exaggerated or even perhaps the choir started the drama just for some cheap publicity?

What would you prefer the press do? Perhaps report it on page 10, bottom right. Should Trump not give daily pressers or perhaps talk about the new Olympics training schedule or say he is happy that those that qualified for this year do not need to re-qualify for the games and skip the pesky science stuff and tell people to not care and just lick objects because it is all made up by the 2 doctors in front of me.

Perhaps you would have Trump tell the voters to go visit your parents and grandparents and they may get their elders infected, but they're old so it doesn't really matter because ifinnegan told me there is just too much drama.
