Why limited to only the drugs from the stockpile? Won’t that delay treatment while the drugs are sent out?

Why limted to only current hospital patients. New hospital patients out of luck?

Why limited to patients weighing at least 110 pounds? Don’t want no short people round here?

“But thus far, there is little scientific evidence that chloroquine, or its closely-related analogue hydroxychloroquine, are effective in treating Covid-19”

CNN desperate for these drugs to fail so people will keep dying and the economy crashes ...

Is there a reason the entire country is not on this if it proves effective?

good news. looks like the lumbering behemoths of bureaucracy are slowly shaking themselves awake. as usual private labs and excellent doctors are/were working way ahead of them.

Remember how the media kept pushing Remdesivir as a possibility?

That is a scary, scary drug - and nowhere near as effective as hydroxychloroquine.

I'd rather take something that just stops the virus replicase than taking Remdesivir that messes big time with the replicated RNA strand as it's being assembled. Voodoo...

Last week and this week I baked bread made with tonic water with quinine for my family. I thought—why not? If there is any tonic water left on the shelves, it’s time for some Gin and Tonics all around. . .

All of a sudden the idiots at CNN are wannabe scientists. Journalists are NOT SCIENTISTS!

But in an effort to help these struggling journalists become scientists, I suggest they contract Covid-19, then they can do an in depth scientific study of their parents and grandparents dying.

Here is the FDA Emergency Use Authorization for Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine

Therapeutics

On March 28, 2020, FDA issued an EUA to allow hydroxychloroquine sulfate and chloroquine phosphate products donated to the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to be distributed and used for certain hospitalized patients with COVID-19. These drugs will be distributed from the SNS to states for doctors to prescribe to adolescent and adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19, as appropriate, when a clinical trial is not available or feasible. The EUA requires that fact sheets that provide important information about using chloroquine phosphate and hydroxychloroquine sulfate in treating COVID-19 be made available to health care providers and patients, including the known risks and drug interactions. The SNS, managed by ASPR, will work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ship donated doses to states.

In its letter, the FDA encouraged randomized clinical trials that could assess the effectiveness of the drugs.

It would certainly be appropriate to conduct some trials that would establish once and for all whether this drug is effective against Covid-19. I hope some protocols have already been approved by IRBs and that patients are being enrolled.

FWIW... Article published about 10 days ago:

“Israel’s Teva donating potential COVID-19 treatment to US hospitals

Teva Pharmaceuticals to donate 6 million hydroxychloroquine tablets through wholesalers to hospitals by March 31, and 10 million within a month.

The global Israeli company Teva Pharmaceutical Industries is donating more than 6 million doses of hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets to hospitals across the United States to meet the urgent demand for the medicine as an investigational target to treat COVID-19.

Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of malaria, lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.”

1) Know that the FDA is covering their butts legally as much as they can with this statement as there are a horde of lawyers ready to sue whomever they can. Doctors and nurses and administrators are often in the lawyers interest.

2) Know that the chances are, that with this proving effective, the supplies will quickly run out. Thus the "stockpile" and with it controls so that it goes to patients who are sick and not to all the celebrities who are afraid they might catch it. This is a war with a virus not a feelings contest.

3) Notice that it was done on an "emergency" basis and calls for studies while it is used. Again, this is to cover there butts some more as in #1. But moreover (pardons the butt pun) this is so that some statistics can be gathered along the way with this process so they can figure out what works and what doesn't on an "Emergency" basis.

Medicine is all about what works and getting effective treatments to as many as truly need it during difficult times. That truly is going to mean "Prioritization" which the press and public is not probably going to like. Drugs must be funneled to those to patients with tested symptoms that it will help the most and to the Doctors and Nurses (if it can be used effectively) so they will not be knocked out and hopefully not becoming vectors themselves.

The War with COVID-19 is on and the FDA knows it. And they know that this is on top of the Yearly Flu War which is a mutating B*STD.

Hopefully COVID-19 will begin to Peak and taper off and the FDA and the medical community can learn something from it.

Without the FDA, I am confident the drug would quickly disappear into the hands of those who wish to profit from it and those who do not need it. My prayers go with the FDA and all those in the Medical community that are fighting this new war - THEY NEED IT!

Where in the flying F are they coming up with this? There have been dozens of news accounts of hydroxychloroquine’s effectiveness. What planet are these idiots living on??

“The drugs — which are used to treat malaria and other conditions — have been called game changers by President Donald Trump.”

************************************************************

Just wondering...need help in translating English.

Does “have been called game changers” mean the same thing as Trump saying “could possibly be a game changer, maybe we ought to look at it”?

For some reason...I don’t know what it could possibly be, but, I just seem to have a little problem putting trust in “reporters”.
