The coronavirus death toll in America doubled in the span of just two days as new potential hotspots emerge in urban centers around the country.

The US currently leads the world in coronavirus infections with 123,778 reported as of Sunday morning. The death toll surpassed 2,100 on Saturday, doubling figures reported two days earlier.

New York City remains the epicenter of the nation's outbreak, with 30,765 cases and 672 deaths.

But several other cities including Detroit, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Boston are now being monitored as potential hotspots, threatening to push the overall case count in the US higher and higher.

'Every metro area should assume that they will have an outbreak equivalent to New York,' Dr Deborah Birx, the White House's coronavirus response coordinator, told NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday morning.

Sure sounds like this will go on a lot longer than Easter.

actually, they should NOT assume they will have an outbreak like New York. The most obvious fact of all outbreaks is that they are asymmetric in their spread.

But of course, she can’t say that publicly.

Harris County Texas, with limited mass transit options, will not have as many cases, per capita, as New York City. She is talking about a worst case scenario. The military mindset is to plan for the worst case events. People will not stay cooped up much longer.

There was a big discussion last night (175 replies) on the San Francisco Chronicle article New York state has 10 times the COVID-19 cases California has. Why?. It's worth reading that discussion. Considering that the San Francisco Bay Area was one of the initial hotspots and there is a huge passenger traffic from China, it is surprising that New York is now 10X San Francisco.

Lots of plausible explanations were provided.

You aint seen nothing yet. I think there is a good chance we test 2008/2009 lows by the end of April if the lockdown is not lifted and you start seeing -30-40% GDP forecasts for Q2.

Possibly. It depends on how people respond. If you go out every day without gloves or a mask into places where there are crowds of people like Sams Club, yeah, it could be bad. If you limit contact outside the house, you will probably be OK

Lots of variables including the development of therapeutics and the onset of Spring, the normal period of decline for the flu, SARS, etc.

The shutdown had better end before Sunday, May 10. That’s Mothers Day. So, unless you want an army of pissed off mothers, you had better end the quarantines.

Does anyone think it’s possible that NYC is tallying Chinese virus death even if the patient had OTHER underlying conditions (ie. diabetes, asthma, lung cancer, etc.)?

I read that Italy was doing this... while Germany was not. And if you look at the numbers between the two, they’re starkly different.

NYC is sooo separate. Millions ride trains and buses and subways. I saw a bus last week in my Town...where we have two buses a day and less than 10 people. And this is a town of 45,000 people.

To: david1292; All

I just received an email from a friend that I am passing on to everyone possible:

From Vincenzas sister

Who is a nurse at NYU

Information from Vienna’s laboratory studying COVID-19 say vast majority of people who died had ibuprofen/Advil in their system so do not take it!! Those who recovered did not take ibuprofen so if you have symptoms, take Paracetamol only!!! Looks like this virus thrives on ibuprofen so don’t do it and tell everyone you can!!!

Please pass this information on to everyone in each family I don’t want to miss anyone so share as much as you can. Or copy and paste!

I just spoke with my friend who is a nurse at VGH (Vancouver) and they just learnt that Advil makes the virus 10x worse. Tylenol ONLY for the time being. She said Advil kickstarts the virus into pneumonia.

She also said they are not releasing the correct number of cases on the news and they have patients coming in everyday and some currently on ventilators. Soon they won’t have enough room in the hospitals to treat patients and will have to turn people away. They’ve cancelled all surgeries to use the ORs for available ventilators, but it still won’t be enough.

She also said she found some people in their 40s and 50s who were previously healthy to be on ventilators and having major difficulty breathing because they took Advil.

Also 4 doctors at VGH are now infected and she said she has never seen her doctors so worried before. So please no Advil and stay safe!!! Love you guys

There are a few articles online
No Advil
No Advil or any NSAIDS!!!!

Shortly after reading the email and sending it to people I know, I got a responding email from friend, who is an RN:

“Yes, our infectious disease specialist says to avoid Advil. New York is overwhelmed with cases. It is being reported as such. Stay safe!”

It is a great time to get every local Government to take their disaster planning and preparation seriously.

Get all the exercise value out of this that we can, so we are better prepared for the next challenge.
