Since the blood donation restriction has been relaxed for homosexual men to one year of abstinence (for same-sex conduct), the incidences of HIV-positive blood detected in donated blood has risen very slightly - they call it insignificant and probably just a statistical blip. But how many queer men did this really qualify to donate? How many out-and-proud queers have abstained for a year? Even with this criteria, the AIDS blood STILL increased.
Can anyone imagine what would happen if all restrictions were lifted? There would be a huge spike in HIV blood detection, and possible quite a few that get missed in the blood testing which would infect a few people.
Remember, each donation is distributed to up to three people.
no
I continue to find it interesting that some people argue for letting those folks with HIV donate blood, while those of us who have had Hepatitus, especially Type A are still banned from donating blood. Even the Red Cross when I was in the Army said “No” to my “O” Positive blood.
I have a fairly uncommon blood type. They won’t take my blood because of getting false positives for Hep exposure. Via a test which has a high percentage of false positives.
After getting flagged twice, I was asked to participate in a study with a much better test which they hoped to persuade the feds to approve/use. I was of course cleared of hep contact, but federal regs say only the crappy test can be used. So I, a healthy and clean person with a blood type in demand, cannot donate blood because of a test that nearly everyone admits is pretty unreliable. But a male homosexual can simply state he hasn’t had “sex” for a year (LOL) and then give blood.
This is just sick.
Yes.
I don’t know. I’ve tried to give in the past after tornado disasters and they will NOT take my blood.
To fight a respiratory virus, bring on a far more lethal blood-borne virus.
Will the Senators also call for a ban of homophobic blood testing?
Makes perfect sense to me.
I don't know if any cases have been documented of mad cow disease being contracted from a blood donation, but they are still strict on that. For a while the rule was no one who had spent more than 6 months since Jan. 1, 1980, could give blood (although people in Europe can give blood there...). For several years I couldn't donate because of that rule but they changed it to five years in Europe since 1980 so I'm eligible...and planning to donate next Monday.
“Men must remain celibate for a year...” Yeah, Right, maybe to the next rest stop or bathhouse,
Doctor there is something queer about this Blood...
I'm so sure that they will happily agree to this to prove just how TOLERANT & PROGRESSIVE they really are, plus how very safe it is to get blood donations from these people!
If they cant get us with Coronavirus, theyll get is with AIDS! Hell no!
The 15 pandering senators recommending it should all be willing to be infused with a pint of gay blood on television BEFORE they are allowed to introduce their bill on the senate
floor. Bet not a one volunteers
1991 and Europe in the green machine for me.
These 15 idiots remind me of the mayor of Florence, Italy a few weeks ago urging residents to hug a Chinese person and appeared on television hugging a Chinese person who looked very uncomfortable
Returned from UK in ‘92. Went again in ‘08, and came home in ‘11. Haven’t bothered asking since then.
Mmmmoooooooo!
Uh...NO!
I agree!! There are at least 500,000 veterans, who were stationed in Europe during the mad cow era, unable to donate blood. I donated often until they put me on the “permanent deferred list”. Argh.
