A stampede for an unproven cure for Covid-19 is clearing the pharmacy shelves of a medicine that is vital for up to 5 million people around the world suffering from lupus, as countries bow to populist pressure and abandon the trials that would show whether hydroxychloroquine works against coronavirus infection.
Both Italy and France have said doctors can now prescribe hydroxychloroquine a less toxic version of the malaria drug chloroquine even though there is no robust evidence to prove that it is effective against Covid-19.
Popular pressure for access to the drug has been ramped up by pronouncements from presidents Donald Trump in the US and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, both of whom have claimed it is a cure. An Australian businessman, the former politician Clive Palmer, has pledged to fund 1m doses to ensure all Australians would have access to the drug as soon as possible.
But the drug is already running out for people with lupus, a disorder of the immune system, who rely on it to stay well. Shortages are being reported from the UK to Thailand to France. India, which manufactures the raw ingredient, has banned all exports of the chemical to safeguard its own supplies and recommended all health workers to take the drug to protect themselves from the virus.
We are incredibly concerned at the moment, said Paul Howard of Lupus UK. We started receiving inquiries from patients across the UK about a week ago. Thats been rapidly increasing more and more people each day.
For 90% of the more than 60,000 people in the UK with lupus, hydroxychloroquine is the mainstay of their treatment, preventing their immune system making too many antibodies, which can otherwise attack the bodys organs mainly the kidneys and the skin,

Make more, stupid. (Not you, Seek)
It’s working and the press better quit lying.
Now “robust” evidence is required to try the drug. They are terrified it might actually work.
Anything, anything to stop this disease from continuing forever. They will do or say anything.
If it is so unproven asshats, why are doctors prescribing it for themselves and their families? They know before the clinical trials tell us what the doctors already know.
First sentence using the word “cure.” Into the trash it goes.
It is also used for the treatment of RA.... I personally know people using it for this purpose, and have for years..now this drug is in short supply for them
The Guardian apparently wants people to die so that the deaths can be used against Trump. I would wager that there is not a single staff member of The Guardian who would not take chloroquine in a heartbeat if they were infected. Not one.
You would think there would be a way for supplied to be reserved for those who had been taking it for a long time for Lupus. Especially in a country like the UK, with nationalized healthcare.
I’m sure Dr. House would have something to say about this
I had totally forgotten about the genuine uses for these meds, besides the much-hyped malaria.
THIS is the cost of unproven usage. Take resources away from people with real chronic problems.
there’s 12 in a dozen, 144 in a gross, etc... I wonder how many are in a robust?
I’ve had malaria.
Trust me, it isn’t ‘much hyped’.
It sucks.
Correction - They know it works and are scared sh*tless that the serfs will find out.
what do you think can happen??? wave a magic wand and make more appear???? I am amazed at the people here on this site that think this is what it will take.... to make money you use as few machines as possible running at maximum (85%) output.... you can crank it up to 100% and risk a failure on the machine, then your output is zero. More machines are needed, along with the corresponing clean rooms to place them in.And no, you cannot place them in the same clean room, because you have to shut that room down to install the new machine, and your output drops to zero....Regardless of wishful thinking, this is a 3 to 6 month process....order equipment, fabricate said equipment, design and install new clean room, install equipment, procure raw material ( this is the sticky part of the process ) and then you can ramp up...
If the medical profession on the ground thought it was a waste, they wouldn’t be using it...supposedly some stockpiled and should be easy enough to ramp up production as it gets depleted...it’s important to the naysayers that it be a wash...
Yep, sounds like they know there's growing evidence it is working and had to grudgingly add the qualifier as CYA for when it becomes undeniable. And create the plan b which is to scream that using it will deprive people with lupus, who as we all know only buy it one pill at a time and never a 30 or 90 day supply and therefore as soon as India shut the doors every lupus person ran out simultaneously.
Everything that has limited supply is generally sent to where it does the most good. What happens to people afflicted with Lupus if they go without treatment? WuFlu?
“Unproven” is a call to delay new use. It’s the same standard applied by governors who forbid use of the treatment to help people afflicted with WuFlu.
Its working and the press WANT more deaths to undermine Trump’s election.
Correct.
