Coronavirus: Belgian woman infected her cat
Brussels Times ^ | March 27, 2020

A Belgian woman from the Liège province has infected her cat with the coronavirus, reported the FPS Public Health during the daily update press conference about the new coronavirus (Covid-19).

“The veterinary medicine faculty in Liège reported that a coronavirus infection has been determined in a cat. The cat lived with her owner, who started showing symptoms of the virus a week before the cat did,” said professor Steven Van Gucht.

The animal lived in close contact with its owner, and started showing symptoms a week after the woman did. “The cat had diarrhoea, kept vomiting and had breathing difficulties. The researchers found the virus in the cat’s faeces,” he added. They did not say whether the cat was still alive.

“Coronavirus: Belgian woman infected her cat”

I’ve never thought much of the Belgians, and this doesn’t help.

>>>> The cat was showing symptoms and had a known exposure. Hence, it was tested.

The cat’s symptom was due to other illness, not consistent with Covid-19 in human. The only thing in this story is because the owner tested positive for coronavirus.

The positive fecal test showing virus showed that cats most likely asymptomatic but did not prove corona virus particles in the cat would/could reinfect other human (i.e. jumping from species to different species).

All it does is to create massive panic amongst the human populace that cats are virus carriers. Like the couple self-ingesting fish tank cleaner to prevent contracting the disease.

There, you happy now?

If cats can be a carrier all this social distancing is for naught.

Can pets infect humans if they have been in contact with infected individuals?

It is known that the environment of Covid-19 patients can be very contaminated. Pets living with infected people are highly exposed to the virus. So far there are only 3 known cases (2 dogs in Hong Kong and 1 cat in Belgium) where the pet has been infected by humans. The dogs showed no disease symptoms and the cat had transient respiratory and digestive disorders. There is no evidence to date that the virus is being transmitted from pets to humans or other pets. Although it is suspected that the virus that causes Covid-19 in humans originally came from wild animals, it has since adapted to humans ("humanized" virus).

Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended to keep applying the classic hygiene rules (avoid close contact with your animal, especially if you are sick, wash your hands after touching an animal, do not let the animal lick your face). This is on the one hand to prevent that you would transmit the virus to your pet and to prevent your pet from becoming a carrier and elimination of the virus as a result of an environmental contamination.

Many animals manifest symptoms in other parts of the body than humans. Coronaviruses primarily cause respiratory illness in humans, but that doesn’t automatically mean it will be a respiratory illness in other animals.

FIP, the well-known coronavirus that infects cats is primarily an intestinal disease that can get into the lungs. I wouldn’t be surprised if Covid-19 affects cats similarly.

Similarly, influenza in birds is primarily an intestinal disease passed through feces. Yet influenza is almost always a respiratory disease in humans.

Interesting. I think I’ve actually seen them grooming themselves too.

As a single man with cat allergies, this may end up doubling my universe of potential mates once the women get rid of their arrogant pestilential pets!

I am sorry, what you said makes testing said cat for corona virus in Belgium case even dumber.

The corona virus causing FIP was previously known, existed for years in wild and domestic cats. And more importantly it didn't cause the current Covid-19 in human.

So the owner tested positive for Covid-19, her cat exhibited FIP symptoms, and the vet tested and found corona virus in cat feces, so what? It still does not prove anything to be worthy of a 'news story'.

Well, if they can carry and transmit the Chinese WMD, it will be a problem.

Although it is suspected that the virus that causes Covid-19 in humans originally came from wild animals, it has since adapted to humans ("humanized" virus).

The Covid-19 virus shows a lot of sequence homology to a bat coronavirus. I would argue that the virus is not humanized yet, because as microorganisms humanize, they become less virulent. It is not conducive to pathogen survival to kill its host.
