Tests for all? French doctor defies government on virus

Marseille (AFP) - Anxious patients wearing masks form a line zig-zagging back several streets outside a hospital in the French Mediterranean port city Marseille.

A video accusing me of fake news has been viewed 450,000 times on Facebook," said Raoult.

"But it's good publicity, they can carry on saying such awful things," he added.

The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, has said he is being treated with chloroquine after being diagnosed with the virus and he publicly defended Raoult.

Waiting in line for her turn, 20-year-old Talia Abad said she would be open to trying the medicine.

"People close to me work in the healthcare sector and they trust the treatment. And because I trust them, I'm willing to experiment," she said.

A clinical trial to test four treatments for coronavirus, including chloroquine, was launched on Sunday in seven European countries. The study is to be conducted on 3,200 patients.

I am losing my nut over this.

WHY THE HELL DON'T THEY JUST GIVE THESE POOR, SUFFERING PEOPLE THE CHLOROQUINE WITHIN RECOMMENDED LEVELS, AND RECORD THE RESULTS???!!!

This is NOT an experiment.

Your system would have been perfectly acceptable back, in say, the Dark Ages. It would have been decreed that bat intestine, or something, works and will be given to all. These days we know that using an experimental control group is a better method. It gives a comparison. We don’t want to dish out chloroquine or hydrochloroquine blindly without medical confidence it works. For one thing, both drugs can have serious, even fatal side effects in some people and can interact with other drugs. And how do you pick which candidate drug to give to everyone without testing? You also have to balance the cost with the benefit (if any). If the drug group shows improvement than the control group can immediately be given the drug. I know some people here reject science and controlled experiment and would rather go with the king’s decree method.

People are dying.

And this is not an experimental drug. It is one of most commonly used drugs in the entire world over the past 70 years. The medical community is intimately educated in it’s use and dangers. It could be safely prescribed based upon criteria from its other uses.

So I ask you, if you’re lying on a gurney, drowning in your own fluids from a certainly fatal cytokine storm, what the hell have you got to lose?

Dark Ages my ass.

Complete BS.

To withhold a drug class that has been safely prescribed to billions of people for eight decades amid a war-like crisis while waiting for a higher level proof is akin to not giving an infected marine dying on Iwo Jima penicillin for lack of elegant scientific proof.

Low risk, potentially high yield.

Yes, indeed. Curiously ‘Steve’s’ home page says he has not posted since 1995. FreeRepublic did not then exist nor did, I think, even its progenitor ‘The Whitewater Chronicles’.

A Freeper Ghost in the wind, LOL!!

Couldn’t agree more. Let the patient decide if he’d rather roll the dice on an experimental use of a known drug or just let the virus run its course.

I get that this isn’t business as usual for the traditional procedures of drug testing. But take a good look around you and tell me: does anything look like business as usual to you?

"Marseille (AFP) - Anxious patients wearing masks form a line zig-zagging back several streets outside a hospital in the French Mediterranean port city Marseille."

Ah, well, Prof Didier Raoult's hospital, yeah if you had the early symptoms that's the line you'd want to be in. The French don't queue as well as the Brits though...

"Theodoric, she has all the symptoms! Save her with Prof. Raoult's Plaquenil and hydrocholorquine treatment!"

"Now now, who's the doctor here? We are men of science, first we must make a double-blind study, with a control group..."

"Doctor, Raoult did that! And then opened the trial 3 days later."

"Wait a minute. Perhaps she's right. Perhaps I've been wrong to blindly follow the medical traditions....Naaaaah. Nurse, bring the leeches!"
