MEXICO CITY -- The governor of a state in central Mexico is arguing that the poor are immune to the new coronavirus, even as the federal government suspends all nonessential government activities beginning Thursday in a bid to prevent the spread of the virus.
Puebla Gov. Miguel Barbosa's comment Wednesday was apparently partly a response to indications that the wealthy have made up a significant percentage of Mexicans infected to date, including some prominent business executives.
Officials say three-quarters of Mexico's 475 confirmed cases are related to international travel, and the poor do not make many international trips. Some people apparently caught the virus on ski trips to Italy or the United States. The country has seen six deaths so far.
The majority are wealthy people. If you are rich, you are at risk. If you are poor, no," Barbosa said of the coronavirus. "We poor people, we are immune.
Barbosa also appeared to be playing on an old stereotype held by some Mexicans that poor sanitation standards may have strengthened their immune systems by exposing them to bacteria or other bugs.

ahh....so the strategy here apparently is to make us all poor so that we’ll be immune.
He might be right. I live, I post in Mexico. My neighboring town had a Day to honor SENIOR citizens. Our clown who led the ceremony asked hoe many were 100 years old? In a crowd of 150, about 15 raised their hands. What was remarkable was there was no walkers, they had their TEETH, they had no breasts removed, or dragging external bags for urine and feces, and had no hearing aids. Not bad for a town that had no Doctors. They walk to the river for water and get up every morning and chop wood. They don;t have AIDS, or worry. Go to Tulsa Oklahoma and see 32 year olds on life support waiting to see the doctor, want to get that Social Security Supplement.
Real hidden quote. We dont care if the poor die so we declare they are immune
No. Mexicos elite are immune to the suffering of poor Mexicans. Always have been. There are more millionaires in Mexico than the US.
The ones who don’t die will be immune.
That’s the way viruses work.
Three weeks ago (or so), most cases in Europe and the U.S. were related to international travel. Even now, more “special” people are getting tested than normal people, so it’s likely our stats will reflect, not the incidence of the disease, but access to tests.
I hope the combination of relative isolation and lower incidence of some comorbidities results in good outcomes for poor people in Mexico and elsewhere.
I have long been told that one can’t fix stupid.
Well - letting them drink bad water for extended periods has given them resistance to a lot of stomach bugs...they drink it and say, “Ahhh - good stuff”, we go down and drink it and say, “Toiletta - pronto!”
Just like they were immune from the swine flu.
............
Mexican poor are less mobile, less likely to catch any bug.
The problem is that when they do get sick they are far more likely to die.
Only if theyre so poor they dont even have their own language, just outrageous accents.
I grew up in Chihuahua, CH.
Those Tarahumara’s are legendary when it comes to health/vitality and Olympic accomplishments.
I will say though that obesity is a huge “problemo en México.”
And some people still argue that Mexico isn’t a third world country? What’s the point of this morons declaration, to keep the poor from rioting when all the medical aid is restricted to the upper classes?
