Opinion: Coronavirus and climate change: The pandemic is a fire drill for our planet's future
NBC "News" / Comcast ^ | March 27, 2020 | By Adam Frank, professor of astrophysics

We've been living in a dream. We climb into jet planes and fly across continents, never giving the accomplishment a second thought. We drive to grocery stores, assuming the shelves will be stocked with endless boxes of food. And every day we plug our devices into the wall, sure that electricity will flow from the outlet.

It's time to wake up.

The international COVID-19 pandemic is many things, but its deepest impact may be fostering a recognition that this machine of civilization that we built is a whole lot more fragile than we thought. And that is why, in the long term, the coronavirus will one day be seen as a fire drill for climate change.

To understand the powerful connection between this pandemic and climate change, we must understand exactly what "modern civilization" means from a scientific point of view. For researchers, the global high-tech society we've built over the last 100 years is actually a series of networks laid on top of one another.

So what does any of this have to do with climate change? Like this pandemic, climate change is also going to push on the networks that make up our civilization. Unlike the pandemic, its effects will be long term, and there won't be a vaccine that can save us.

Now that we have seen what breaking the networks — the machine — of civilization can look like, we must stop pretending that everything will be OK and that we can just go back to business as usual when the threat of the coronavirus subsides.

The pandemic has awakened us from our slumber. It is letting us see the real consequences of denial. That may be its most important lesson — allowing us the insight, strength and compassion to build a resilient and robust future.

The cause of these pandemics (if true) in the past years have come from china and the fact that they are eating things they shouldn’t be eating

What the pandemic shows is that you can cut CO2 emissions a little by killing the economy.

...this machine of civilization that we built

This, this little statement reflects the entire problem. This putrid arrogant humanist belief. This deliberate denial of our Creator. This always seems to go hand in hand with the believers in globull warming and all the other kook elements of the liberal faith.

I think this crisis was the kick-in-the-pants that telemedicine and perhaps even distance/remote working needed to get them over the traditional resistance hump.

Both make a lot of sense, but our medical practice and business managers are rightly resistant to change unless and until they know there is a very good reason for it.

Both telemedicine and remote working are very good for the country and the economy. In many, if not most cases, there is no reason for people to meet face to face to work and/or solve problems when it can be done easily and more efficiently over the internet.

Still waiting for worldwide starvation as predicted by 2000, coincidentally, the same year oil was to be depleted.

The Fake Experts saw nothing coming that actually happened. They are too busy predicting things that do not happen. It’s amazing they can still find funding when their record is 100% failure.

“The pandemic has awakened us from our slumber. It is letting us see the real consequences of denial.”

What a howler. No sir, it’s because very wealthy and liberal business interests treated a Third World country with a brutal totalitarian government and half to three quarters empty modern buildings and infrastructure as their goldmine to build and sell their products without the labour and environmental standards we’ve taken for granted in the Western world for many years.

Articles like this are a sign that the purveyors of doom have exploited this panic for all its worth, and are moving on.

The virus didn’t grind our economies and civilization to a halt, we did it voluntarily. We CAN start them up again as we choose. It is also ironic that it is people like Dr Adams (who have been wrong about everything) who are demanding that we dismantle our economies and civilization and go back to living in the 1800’s. There is no doubt that that would kill many more people than the virus ever would.

It dawned on me last night a real telling omission in the fight against carbon emissions.

If they are really serious about it, why has no one proposed removing the CO2 fizz from soft drinks, beer and champagne??????????
