Hospitals across the country are considering whether to enact universal do-not-resuscitate orders for coronavirus patients as the mounting pandemic threatens to overwhelm the health care system, according to a report.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago is among the hospitals where the drastic policy is under consideration even when the move is against the wishes of a patient and their family, The Washington Post reported.
Richard Wunderink, one of Northwesterns intensive-care medical directors, told the outlet the hospital is exploring whether state law would allow it to implement the policy, which would limit possible exposure to health care workers and maximize resources.
Its a major concern for everyone, Wunderink said. This is something about which we have had lots of communication with families, and I think they are very aware of the grave circumstances.
These conversations come as hospitals face a surge in cases coupled with a shortage of life-saving ventilators and protective gear for staffers.
We are now facing some difficult choices in how we apply medical resources including staff, Lewis Kaplan, president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and a University of Pennsylvania surgeon, told the newspaper.

Hospital bureaucracy enacted mass euthanasia.
Under the guise of “streamlining care”.
Look for people without corona to be purposely labeled as having it to deny care.
don’t have your Trump/Pence tee shirt on when you go into the hospital!
Rule # 1 - Don’t go to the hospital unless you’re deathly ill.
Rule # 2 - If you’re deathly ill its better to die at home.
Don’t be former military either.
Especially in blue states.
They can just hand out blue pills when you drive up to the emergency room entrance.
I would hate to be a member of any such Medical Staff, one that made a decision to ‘encourage the peaceful demise’ of a terminal Corona patient. Families have been known to become violent in their anger and grief.
Exactly right.
Wonder what the ‘list’ of infected people will be used for?
Might as well put in an order for a couple thousand suicide pillows while they are at it. If they are not sure how to use them I’m sure that Hillary will give seminars. After all, she is a Chicago kind of girl.
Debunked by Dr. Birx at today’s Trump presser. Go to YouTube and watch her.
Being this is the Chicago area I sincerely doubt they will do anything untoward to any person with a vowel at the end of their name.
Dr. Birx addressed this today in the White House presser. Said she had investigated this in NYC and it was completely unnecessary. There were unused ICU beds and ventilators. Scolded the press for pushing this story and told them it was irresponsible.
I love the daily pressers because at least one media critter gets a swatting...sometimes by the POTUS himself.
A future possibility, I assume, is what the Post was discussing.
Tucker Carlson had a segment on this tonight
Hospitals follow state law on such matters
‘’Dr. Birx addressed this today in the White House presser. Said she had investigated this in NYC and it was completely unnecessary. There were unused ICU beds and ventilators. Scolded the press for pushing this story and told them it was irresponsible.””
Thank you,
So Good to hear!
Nothing In the long authorizes them to make DNR orders against family or patients wishes. As sad fact of life is that a large number of medical people in America would be very comfortable being a Nazi making selections on the train platform...They do not make their choices based on medical need. They evaluate you by age and make arbitrary decisions about the value of your life. Young is valuable, old is not. Exactly like Dr. Mengele
