At Atlanta's Grady Hospital, all 100 beds in the intensive care unit were full. Then COVID-19 hit. Viral patients are now quarantined wherever the hospital finds space.
"The stress is not just capacity," Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Jansen told CBS News. "It's not just stress of supplies, but on the individuals taking care of the patients. Because so much is not known."
At all of Atlanta's four major hospitals, every ICU bed is taken.
"Just kinda deteriorated," said Justin Anthony, whose cousin is in one of those hospitals. "By Sunday, the fever had not broken and she started coughing.
His cousin, Emma, is 12, one of Georgia's youngest coronavirus patients. Emma's hooked to a ventilator at Atlanta's Children Hospital.
In Alabama, a newborn baby girl is in isolation after her nurse tested positive for COVID-19.
Back in Georgia, at one rural hospital, 12 COVID-19 patients have died. That's more than in thirty-eight states. The hospital is overwhelmed.
"They've asked for help, but we can't give it," Jansen said.

Just a flu, bro.
Nothing in this article actually suggestions COVID is that bad (100% full before first case). It actually suggests there were way too few ICU beds going into this at this hospital.

its the public hospital in Atlanta. I assume if you take a round in the chest in the hood, this is where you wind up.
Grady is where the poor folk go in the ATL.
“Just a flu, bro.”
...and think of all the fun when the cases increase 10-fold in 2 weeks!
All four hospitals are full. Three private ones and the public Grady.
It sounds like COVID had no impact on ICU bed use across all of Atlanta.
Id say this means the virus is harmless!
Im sure appearances are deceiving, but it almost appears as though people are actually rooting for the virus.
Wonder how The Real Governof of GA would have handled this...
Relieved you are still with us. Best to you.
Oh, God, you could die of a bee sting in Grady.
Boston hospitals are doing fine. Nurses are wondering when the deluge will come.
Yikes.
Short on detail, but if true, this in not good news.
I wish there was more granularity. Four major hospitals is pretty vague. There are many more that four major hospitals in ATL, but four major hospital groups is probably about right.
“Im sure appearances are deceiving, but it almost appears as though people are actually rooting for the virus.”
I’m rooting to have hospitals available for people who need them beyond the FluBros (flattening the curve) as has been done in other countries. Not sure about others here - maybe they don’t have older people in their families?
I think you are right, John.
What appears on the surface to be self-congratulatory pats on the back has to be something different entirely.
I live here. Metro Atlanta has wayyy more than 4 hospitals. Grady is always a cluster. Overall plenty of medical facilities and resources here, believe me.
But nowadays we just run with whatever the news stories say around here ..
That is correct regarding Grady. However, theyve come a long way in the last several years due in part to a huge influx of cash from Bernie Marcus, the former Chairman of the Board of Home Depot and noted conservative / Trump supporter. Grady is world class on burn care and stroke care, in particular. And theyre the go-to place if youve experienced trauma, as you note.
All Atlanta Hospitals ICU beds are now full. Very surprise Atlanta’s Grady Hospital only has 100 ICU beds.
I heard it take anywhere from 14 to 21 days if you have this flu bad enough to need ICU.
Meanwhile the next Flu patient who needs ICU will have to just try to hang on until a bed is available.
Very Nasty Flu.
