At Atlanta's Grady Hospital, all 100 beds in the intensive care unit were full. Then COVID-19 hit. Viral patients are now quarantined wherever the hospital finds space.
"The stress is not just capacity," Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Jansen told CBS News. "It's not just stress of supplies, but on the individuals taking care of the patients. Because so much is not known."
At all of Atlanta's four major hospitals, every ICU bed is taken.
"Just kinda deteriorated," said Justin Anthony, whose cousin is in one of those hospitals. "By Sunday, the fever had not broken and she started coughing.
His cousin, Emma, is 12, one of Georgia's youngest coronavirus patients. Emma's hooked to a ventilator at Atlanta's Children Hospital.
In Alabama, a newborn baby girl is in isolation after her nurse tested positive for COVID-19.
Back in Georgia, at one rural hospital, 12 COVID-19 patients have died. That's more than in thirty-eight states. The hospital is overwhelmed.
"They've asked for help, but we can't give it," Jansen said.

Except that they NEED ICU beds to treat a known percentage of COVID patients. In other words, there is a certain percentage who become critically (in danger of losing their lives) ill. And this percentage is high enough that if nothing is done they will overwhelm the medical system.
Flu can be deadly, bro. We usually dont shut down society in fear though, brah.
Not sure what your pic is supposed to mean - if you got something to say, say it
ALERT! You and yours stay safe. Social distance, anti- social distance by locking yourselves in. Normal will never be boring again.
Atlanta Georgia has about 139 hospitals I don’t think they are running out of ICU Space. Plus Georgia has over 300 hospitals. Or more I quit counting..
way too many unknowns in this coronavirus universe to conclude whether its nothing, and certainly not enough information to think were all going to die tomorrow.
People who are paranoid are causing damage in a variety of ways - but so are the people who are completely or nearly completely dismissive.
There is a brand new hospital with 408 beds available. It also has rooms for offices and meetings but nobody is in those rooms. It is totally vacant and ready to be filled with whomever. It is on N Peachtree in Atlanta.
There are 85 bed hospitals recently closed in East GA that could be reopened Of course, most of those with COVID-19 are in West GA from Floyd to Cobb to Carroll to Douoghtery to Early.
There are many 25 bed hospitals in the SW GA COVID-19 hot spot that could be reopened. Probably non-COVID-19 patients would be transferred to them to open up beds in the bigger hospitals for the current pandemic
There are other creative ways to find hospital beds.
“Bob its just the flu dont panic. Maybe you should go on a TP hunt to keep your mind off of it.”
I’m not a FluBro (in case you haven’t noticed), so I wasn’t in those panicked crowds at Costco trying to find a package of toilet paper, nor will I be, for years.
Does Atlanta have a lot of people who go to NOLA for Mardi Gras?
They should have put that in the article. Very bad reporting...
while surely a crisis of some level or another, I definitely think this virus is being used to (a) pump up cable news channel ratings, (b) defame the president, (c) justify a liberal agenda that they cant get through Congress, (d) generally scare the sh*t out of people, and (e) defame the president.
did I mention I think theyre trying to defame the president?
“Bullshit. You just jump on every negative news article and celebrate it. I can tell you this Atlanta storynis an exaggeration. Remember when FR didnt take every news story as gospel?”
You guys are getting quite defensive. I guess the virus is more real than you guys thought it would be, now that our hospitals are being trashed.
And here comes the biggest idiot..
Grady was already full. ANY outbreak of anything would overfill them, in fact they are always beyond capacity. Your comrades in the media found a convenient place for your/their narrative.
In the real world, Atlanta has tons of hospitals and beds. And there are relatively few dire cases here anyway.
I know this city like the back of my hand so take your weak shit elsewhere.
It is not a virus, it is a flu man.
Well said post 40. It is not overwhelmed anywhere in Georgia.
Thank you!

Cases/Deaths
Yup.
More and more stories coming out about all over the usa, they have deliberately been light on hospitals.
Part of it is the infighting between different hospital systems, in terms of ‘turf wars’, and trying to act like cable companies do in an area.
