The Chinese govt apparently mandated cell phone users several months ago, to include health information in their phones.
I believe some users, simply cancelled, as a result.
How better to ‘control’ a population than by disarming them and cutting off communication to the outside world.
Some will soon be wondering why WE ever let CW go ‘down the drain’.

Chinese I know often have multiple cell phones - one for friends, business, mistresses, or any other reason. You can buy very cheap phones there.
There’s also the possibility of the ChiComs using the excuse and panic to make people disappear.
If a business is shut down, then a lot of business phone accounts cease until such a time as they get back on their feet.
So not every vanished phone account equates to a death.
Even ours do!

I would imagine China would immediately cut cell phone service if they saw anything being transmitted that they didn’t like.
I think you have the Occam’s Razor answer.
If they all dropped dead we’d be seeing proportional numbers in other countries, which we aren’t.
Yes, they are lying but lapsed cellphones have little or no bearing on the death toll.
Lots of people in Asia have more than one cellphone. Kids will have the official phone their parents give them and a private phone to talk to their friends on. Businesses will have an official cell phone that is separate from your personal phone. Taxi drivers in HK and China have 4 or 5 cell phones plugged into their dash to get riders.
As I said in a previous time this was posted I once laughed until I cried at a girl in the HK MTR who had three phones ringing at the same time and was struggling to answer all of them.
Many of these people pay a monthly fee for the phone in cash at a China mobile. They can’t go out. People don’t use credit cards because a lot of the PRC economy is a cash economy so, .......... they can’t charge the phone. The contract lapses.
