UK has enough intensive care units for coronavirus

The UK should now be able to cope with the spread of the covid-19 virus, according to one of the epidemiologists advising the government.

Neil Ferguson at Imperial College London gave evidence today to the UK’s parliamentary select committee on science and technology as part of an inquiry into the nation’s response to the coronavirus outbreak.

He said that expected increases in National Health Service capacity and ongoing restrictions to people’s movements make him “reasonably confident” the health service can cope when the predicted peak of the epidemic arrives in two or three weeks. UK deaths from the disease are now unlikely to exceed 20,000, he said, and could be much lower.

The need for intensive care beds will get very close to capacity in some areas, but won’t be breached at a national level, said Ferguson. The projections are based on computer simulations of the virus spreading, which take into account the properties of the virus, the reduced transmission between people asked to stay at home and the capacity of hospitals, particularly intensive care units.

So, if this ‘hole’ thing fizzles and turns out to be a dud, can we even envision the pile on of PDJT ‘over-reacting’ to the “flu”?

It’s too late for the media to walk it back. The spin would just as easily be, “Look, the measures that we took worked.”

The UK says they can handle this.
I think we can handle this.

Can NY handle this? I dunno. If they can’t I guess that’s Cuomo’s fault.

Wait....what?

You mean they haven't been overwhelmed?

Has to be fake news....with so many in mindless panic mode, it just has to be fake news....has....to....be....fake....

well we knew the stories would always be, “LOOK HOW PREPARED THE REST OF THE WORLD IS VS THE USA” and “BAD POTUS”

Listen, these unprepared hospitals are all located in Democratic districts...metropolitan areas where ever low life is supported and welcomed, even illegals.
So when hospitals in NYC or Chicago get overwhelmed we’re suppose to blame who? The healthcare system? AH got it. *eyeroll*

Ferguson recommend lockdown measures and they actually did it. What a concept!

The UK kills the elderly. See Liverpool Care Pathway.
120,000 a year. If you are old they will not treat you.
You die. Democrats want this in the USA.

You do realize that without social distancing the above headlines would not be the case- right? Or are you not capable of putting the two concepts together logically?

Logic? Pffffttttt. Who needs logic when there’s emotions to be expended. :-)

That sure is a convenient excuse for causing an economic depression. The science regarding the efficacy of social distancing with this is not settled. Neither is the question of how long this has already been in the population.

I am noticing that the panic pushers, realizing their dire predictions are going to be incredibly hyperbolic in hindsight, are now preparing their “whew! We stopped it! “ defense.

Apparently people who don't know logarithmic progressions - or anything about epidemiology - or R0. So - if anyone can tell me - LOGICALLY and with science (using Nd+1=(1+e*p)N*d or f(x)= e^x) what the numbers would have been without any measures taken at all (you know - just like the flu or cold - because there is no vaccine) - and they quantify that scientifically - then go for it. Otherwise - they are JUST as guilty of being emotional (which is the state of relying on feelings instead of science) as what they accuse others as being.

So - go for it - solve for x. Tell me D+365 numbers: cases and deaths with zero social distancing measures just like people tell us D+365 cases and deaths with the flu. Solve for x. If you can't do that - you are using your emotions and not facts and logic. I'll wait. Jut to help you to solve the equations, both x and Nd+1 were running at about 1.3 - 1.35 pre-social distancing. So - go solve that equation and get back to me. Any other answer is an emotional response.

Are you being emotional? I think so. Again - you tell me without social distancing what D+365 cases and deaths are solving Nd+1=(1+e*p)N*d or f(x)= e^x. You seem to know the answer - so let everyone else know.

If social distancing is worse - than Nd+1=(1+e*p)N*d or f(x)= e^x must not be worse - so tell us case/death after D+365 solving for Nd+1 or x.

Any other response is an emotional response. What's the number?

Given the HYSTERIA around the topic, 10 MINUTES OF COMMON SENSE from a scientist in the field.
Has anyone VETTED the SCIENTISTS now surrounding & “advising” Trump? How many are leftist Democrats with a political agenda? Consider the STILL NOT CLEANED OUT Deep State INFECTED DOJ & God knows how many other government departments.
Have we ever been lied to by the managerial class in government whose jobs depend on how submissive they can keep the rest of us?
How many of them HATE TRUMP & his stated goal to DRAIN THEIR SWAMP?
Heard the stories that CDC employees wept when Trump beat Hillary? How objective would THOSE folks be collecting & analyzing the data? And wouldn’t a “SCARE” like this serve to open the tax slave (er PAYER) money sigot for them, as another government operation, to piss away on “research” (or whatever)?
Anybody know???
I didn’t think so.
One final thought: Could this just be another of the periodic tests conducted by Deep State leftists who would be more at home in Stalin’s Russia than Trump’s America to see if their century long socialist indoctrination in the GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS has enough of us sufficiently DUMBED DOWN to make their long awaited FINAL PUSH?
Just asking evidence based questions here.

The problem with your argument is that it ignores the possibility that this was widely circulating in our population for several months before being identified as a novel strain of the virus.

Until a meaningful statistical analysis is done based on serological antibody detection, it is meaningless to start using our distancing measures as the zero base for its efficacy.

And thus blanket statements like yours can also not be made. However - given the number of negative test results we are seeing - it would seem that your scenario would not be the case - because the epidemiological curve would be much different.

So - either way - you cannot say this or that. We know based upon observation (tested individuals) what happens to the tested population - what their CIR/CFR is. We have a very good idea of the range of the R0. We also have a decent idea that the Chinese lied their collective a$$'s off about their numbers (and anybody who thinks it was just 80K/3K is a fool - we are almost at that case rate now with 1/4 the population and not near as many days).

So - given all of this - if you want to blame someone - why isn't your blame falling on TRUMP and PENCE? They are the authors of the U . S. Government COVID - 19 Response Plan and it is that team - with Pence in charge that wrote Phase 2C that the governors and local guys are following (as is according to CONPLANS). Yet you guys want to pass the buck - and it has been the most amazing thing to observe - except the guys who are actually directing the orchestra:

""Continue to reinforce home isolation strategies and ensure that those who are most at risk and severely ill are able to receive care. Recommend significantly limiting public gatherings and cancellation of almost all sporting events, performances, and public and private meetings that can not be convened by phone Consider school closures. Issue widespread “ stay at home ” directives for public and private organizations, with nearly 100 % telework for some, although critical public services and infrastructure may need to retain skeleton crews. Law enforcement could shift to focus more on crime prevention, as routine monitoring of storefronts could be important."

Those are the directions of the Pence team to the states. So - stop blaming Freepers and stop blaming liberal governors. Stop blaming Fauci. Trump and Pence either play 4D chess and are either the smartest guys in the room - or are the dumbest guys in teh room - you can't hae it both ways.

Make up your mind - either SUPPORT your president and stand behind him - or revolt and demand his resignation (or at peast Pence's - because THIS is his directive.

I do like your well thought out responses.

In answer to the general query of your message - I am actually very disillusioned with all levels of our government and both parties, for what I feel was a very arbitrary course of severe actions without much thoughtful cost/benefit analysis, as well as the one size fits all approach to every geographic area and demographic.
