Can You Become Immune to the Coronavirus?
NY Times ^ | Apoorva Mandavalli

As the number of people infected with the coronavirus surpasses 450,000 worldwide, and more than one billion are locked in their homes, scientists are wrestling with one of the most pressing questions of the pandemic: Do people who survive the infection become immune to the virus?

The answer is a qualified yes, with some significant unknowns. That’s important for several reasons.

People who are confirmed to be immune could venture from their homes and help shore up the work force until a vaccine becomes available, for example. In particular, health care workers who are known to be immune could continue to care for the severely ill.

Growing immunity in the community also is the way the epidemic ends: With fewer and fewer people to infect, the coronavirus will lose its toehold and even the most vulnerable citizens become more insulated from the threat.

Looks like the current prediction is 2-3 years immunity and less severe disease if reinfected ...

Unfortunately, much like the Flu, there will be multiple strains of Covid in short order.
Just because your body is “resistant” to one doesn’t make you immune to others.

No.

No one is immune to the common cold. No one is immune to this year’s flu, last year’s flu, the flu from 10 years ago, etc. This monster is a virus. Viruses mutate.

the bigger question is: can they mass harvest antibodies from those recovered to treat those with life threatening symptoms.
Then this becomes more like the regular flu and we can open up
the world again.

I wonder if people who have it and don’t show symptoms are basically immune?

bgill :" This monster is a virus. Viruses mutate."

Exactly true - viri mutate easily due to their simplicity of their RNA.

No, they are just carriers.

The difference is, someone who is immune won’t infect other people, because the virus cannot survive and replicate in their body. A carrier may not get sick themselves, but they are still running around spreading the virus to everyone else.

I think I had a mild case of it last summer. Probably got it from something while working at a golf course with a lot of woods (bats?) and some wetland features. Another employee who happened to be off for the almost 2 weeks that I remember being “symptomatic” came down with the same thing(s) at approx the same time. Fever wasn’t high or maybe not even elevated, runny nose, cough, sneezing...Cough was not dry and was with a lot ofphlem coming up but there were what could have been the gastro-intestinal symptoms I’ve heard about.

So,

How does one know whether they had it more than six months ago?

This is the most odd thing about this illness. No one wants to catch it and yet everyone hopes they already did and didn’t know it and now they are immune.

I had West Nile Virus a few years ago. I have never been able to determine if I am immune to it in the future.

"Necessity is the mother of invention!" One of my favorite axioms and I am hoping that the increased focus on the Wuhan Virus will result in a 100% effective vaccine.

Cures for common colds or the flu would have a significant impact on cold remedy products and even orange juice, etc., but the need to stop the alleged carnage of the Wuhan Virus could trigger some miraculous medical discoveries! Supercomputers analyzing virus strains will be key in developing a cure.

Is there a blood test for West Nile? Also, damage from West Virus can be long-lasting and even permanent, right?

So far the reports I’ve seen are that covid-19 is not mutating at a high rate, thus acquired immunity should be durable. China will be the tell, since they’re not on the downside of the initial infection.

Not sure. I have not researched it in a while but I was unable to find anything definitive a few years ago. When I was diagnosed with it, they did a blood test but it took about a week to come back. By then, I was already on the mend. Just flu-like symptoms.

Time will tell - some bodies develop different rates of resistance than others but the nature of this seems to indicate some sort of built-up resistance is possible.

True - but the common cold doesn't thin the herd like other viruses do..different bodies will develop different levels of resistance...I haven't had a Flu shot for a few years and haven't had the Flu for much longer...not many colds either but I don't throe all caution to the wind and invite them in.

Your statement is definitive - what's yer qualifications for making it so?

Dr. Birx answered this question a couple of days ago. The answer is yes. If only people would listen to what is being said in Trump pressers.
