Coronavirus advice from Mexico's president: 'Live life as usual'
The Guardian ^ | 3/25/2019

From a bountiful table filled with culinary delights from Oaxaca, Mexico’s president offered unusual advice for a country facing the coronavirus crunch: keep dining out.

“We’re going to keep living life as usual,” a relaxed Andrés Manuel López Obrador insisted in an online video shot during a weekend tour of the southern Mexican state.

“I’ll tell you when not to go out any longer,” the left-wing populist said, explaining that the pandemic was still only in its first phase.

“If you’re able and have the means to do so, continue taking your family out to eat … because that strengthens the economy.”

López Obrador, who most know as Amlo, has responded to the coronavirus crisis with nonchalance – never missing an opportunity to contradict the advice of public health officials or paint the pandemic as a plot to derail his presidency.

In recent weeks Amlo has routinely avoided social distancing and organised campaign-style rallies rife with gladhanding, hugs and baby-kissing.

Left wing leader handling it better than Trump, for now. This is the exception. Most of the lefties in the globe are handling it worse than Trump.

AMLO is definitely a FluBro.

Mexico will be an interesting experiment.

We’ll see what happens in a couple weeks.

There’s always the chance that people are not going to listen to him, too, so it’s going to be hard to tell if his advice is bad or not.

I do think it is, but that’s me.

Besides, he’s a lefty. They don’t care about the unwashed.
The fewer people on government assistance, the better.

Enjoy all your stuff imported from Mexico, everybody, particularly the produce and other food items.

I ordered California avocados.

Most frozen vegetables in the supermarket are from Mexico. Even at Whole Foods. Some at other stores are from China.

Most produce at Safeway is from Mexico.

Posting from Mexico, from a tourist spot, sort of like the Hamptons. Normal Mexicans go about their business and never changed or missed a step. The elite wealthy celebs, Americanized Mexicans, hunkered down in our tourist haven, and have emptied shelves of staple goods, toilet paper just like in the USA. Where the plebes, or riff raff shop, there is plenty of Vitamin C, toilet paper and hand soap. President AMLO has 36 cases to worry about in Mexico. This country is affected by the alarmist mass media, which always was intent to destroy a healthy Trump Economy, and use Executive orders to nationalize business, close schools, churches and usher in the gov’t control. AMLO says he won’t ask money from the IMF, or citizens should NOT expect any bailouts. We are in the fast lane.

AMLO has been a surprise. I might go as far to say he’s the best President Mexico has had in my lifetime, not that it’s saying much.

Of course if the Mexican economy collapses, it’s not a big deal.

If the US economy collapses, it’s going to take everybody else with them.

Mexico City forecasted high of 88f. The spread may slowed by the warm temperatures there I hope and pray.

Mexico is a failed state, so “life as usual” isn’t really a positive thing...

The experiment is to see if an economy can soldier on as the virus quickly sweeps through the population.

I would agree with that except to warn them to exercise common sense caution. Wash hands!
