KEVIN ROCHE: MY STRUGGLE WITH THE STAR TRIBUNE (Great article on the virus)
Powerline ^ | March | BY SCOTT JOHNSON

Posted on 03/25/2020 8:40:37 AM PDT by Hojczyk

The real tragedy is that all these efforts to completely suppress the virus are likely futile. Like the influenza virus, coronaviruses, including this variant, are here to stay. While it makes sense to attempt to limit the surge in demand on the health system, continued suppression efforts only spread the economic pain out further and further, without creating any meaningful overall decline in the eventual total number of illnesses and deaths. A far more reasonable strategy, and one which was used with swine flu, would be to mitigate the effects, protect the most vulnerable but not intentionally inflict massive economic damage that has health and other effects far worse than the virus itself, and that weakens the ability of society and government to respond.

We need to immediately embark on a different course, before the damage we inflict on ourselves is beyond repair. Open the schools. Let bars and restaurants open. Encourage stores to be open. Encourage businesses to keep employees and get them back to work. Continue to mandate careful hygiene. Continue testing and enforce quarantine of the infected. Close senior residences to visitors, keep their staff infection free, and take other steps to protect vulnerable populations. And people who have reason to fear becoming infected or are just afraid to go out in public can stay home, that should be their choice. But locking down the economy is too severe a harm to be justified.

Open the schools

I stopped here only because I'd like to see our schools burnt to the ground.

“Open the schools. I stopped here only because I’d like to see our schools burnt to the ground.”

Indeed. The infections administered by the NEA and their colletion of clowns with toy degrees are far far more serious than the virus.

Let’s give the known drugs a few more days. After that, I have to agree.

Hollywood A Listers had been getting hydroxychloroquine for a while, Docs overseas have also started using it.

Some Docs (other than the ones for the A Listers) had started it on their own. Trump talked about it a week ago and the floodgates for using it have opened.

NY went all in yesterday.

From what I’ve gleaned if it’s going to work results (not cured) start to show in 1 to 4 days.

By Saturday the numbers will tell one way or the other.

Then it becomes a question of how fast the drug companies can crank hydroxychloroquine out.

Some people I know in NJ were saying they expect the K-12 schools there will not reopen for this school year.

I said I think that is stupid. They should get the kids back to school as soon as they can and cancel summer vacation and summer school; using the time to make up for the time lost this year - since March 13.

Wisconsin cancelled all classes for the remainder of this year, but students are homeschooling online. I didn’t hear or read the actual announcement to know how it was worded

Virginia closed their schools also, and that announcement was “for AT LEAST the rest of this school year”.

I take the “at least” to mean that if poll numbers haven’t turned against Trump by mid-August, they’ll close them again to piss people off closer to election time.

False - the lower we make R0, the lower the eventual total number of infections. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3506030/ equation 3

I now consider the handling of the swine flu to be the highlight of Obama’s presidency. He did well to manage things back then.
