MEXICO CITY - As the novel coronavirus spreads in Mexico, doctors and nurses at public hospitals have begun protesting a shortage of personnel and basic supplies such as masks and gloves.
Medical staff held strikes and walkouts across the country this week, warning that a lack of resources increases the risk for them and their families as well as for patients.
Even before COVID-19 arrived in Mexico, which has seen 367 confirmed cases and four deaths, the nations health care system was strained.
Lengthy wait times for procedures are common at the countrys vast network of public hospitals and clinics, where most Mexicans receive care. Often, doctors and nurses have been forced to ask patients to buy them surgical masks, gowns and other basic supplies.
By many accounts, things have gotten worse since President Andres Manuel López Obrador took office in December 2018 and embarked on a program of deep cuts in government spending.
The leftist populist who ran on an anti-corruption platform has canceled contracts with drug companies, which he alleged were working with a crooked network of hospital administrators.
That may have been true. But López Obradors dramatic changes have led to shortages of life-saving drugs. Two of the groups hardest hit by the shortages are children with cancer and patients with HIV.

Build the Wall!
Oh really? I've been reading about the Oxford model that suggests that this whole thing spread rapidly in November and by know the population is saturated, herd immunity has set in and it's all a nothing-burger.
Forget the masks, its already over.
Agree !
My son surely had it in January. Passed out at Urgent Care. Bad sore throat. All tests negative, of course we didnt even know about WuFlu then. He stayed at our house, so weve all been exposed. Three of his co-workers came down with it, too.
Everyone is fine now.
They are going to make a run for the border! God help the Border Patrol agents.
Interesting you say that. I had some sort of respiratory illness in late October right before Halloween and then it came back around mid-November. My SO is convinced I had it then.
Was your son exposed to folks from China in December/January? Just curious how he may have gotten it.
Mexico didnt close their northern border soon enough...
He-yuk!
What, they finally woke up from their siesta and realized there’s something afoot?
I have Missionary friends who preach the Gospel and work in the towns along the border. They says if the general US population was aware of all the evil(Drugs, Sex Trafficking, Weapons, Criminals, etc) seeping across the border they would demand 100 foot tall, deep, and wide wall covered by electrified razor wire along the border.
Mexico holds big music festival despite coronavirus concerns
Was out shopping yesterday and only saw 2 people wearing masks , they were Chinese and the guy was popping cough drops while they went through the Walmart self-service checkout . I never go use those checkouts
I and my family and a lot of coworkers had a bad respiratory illness in October. It was not COVID-19 I assure you because the statistics would have kicked in and one of us would have died from it.
I am sure that the timing varies depending on the location. We live in East King County with approximately half a million Chinese immigrants. The numbers will soon reveal that it has already peaked here. Tens of thousands of Chinese go back home to visit regularly. This year over ten thousand came back after the “travel ban” by flying into Vancouver International instead of SeaTac... No health screening at the airport or at the border... it probably saved them time and aggravation.
The question around here is not if you are going to get it, but if you have already had it. Since 80% of people and 90% of kids and young adults have no or very mild symptoms... most of my acquaintances believe that they have already had it and gotten over it.
If it hadn't hit a vulnerable group at the Life Care Center in Kirkland, it would have gone around here undetected for even longer. My wife and I have both volunteered and been paid to work at the Life Care Center. There are reasons why the place was devastated. Mostly because they provided a higher level of care and had a lot of very sick people living there.
There are reasons why it caused a lot of devastation in China, and Italy. In places where you have a million people packed per square mile living right on top of one another with several people old and young sharing a 400 sq. ft. apartment... and each apartment sharing kitchens and bathrooms with several other apartments... this type of illness is going to spread very quickly. And the unlucky people with compromised immune systems who need medical attention are not going to get it in a timely manner.
Its incredible that more communicable diseases do not cause disasters in big cities in China. The reason they do not s the same reasons that kids who regularly play in filth have stronger immune systems than those who are overprotected by their mothers. And this gets to Italy where the locations hit hardest have high population density , the highest percentage of old people in Europe, a horrid socialized medical system and the highest percentage of recent Chinese immigrants in Europe. You are mixing young Chinese immigrants with strong immune systems with vulnerable old people in a place with substandard medical care. And we are surprised that this place was hit hard?
“All tests negative...”
Of course the test were negative. President Trump personally passed out faulty coronavirus tests that couldn’t have detected a five-pound Wuhan virus bug in a two-pound Ziploc baggie. Don’t you read the lamestream media’s accounts?
;-)
When my wife and I visited Mexico, about 20 years ago, we went on a bus tour out to Chichen Itza and the tour guide was telling us how to safely climb the thing. And he added, "Be very careful because the nearest hospital is 100 miles away - and they don't have any medicine"!
Similar experience in Brazil. Locals call the "free" government medical clinics Butcher Shops. They take out loans to get real medical care from private (capitalist) providers.
i have a brother-in-law who went grocery shopping wearing rubber gloves....’nobody’ in the store had gloves or masks on.
