Hoping to stem the toll of the states surging coronavirus outbreak, New York health officials plan to begin collecting plasma from people who have recovered and injecting the antibody-rich fluid into patients still fighting the virus.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the plans during a news briefing Monday. The treatment, known as convalescent plasma, dates back centuries and was used during the flu epidemic of 1918 in an era before modern vaccines and antiviral drugs, NBC News reports.
Some experts say the treatment, although somewhat primitive, might be the best hope for combating the coronavirus until more sophisticated therapies can be developed, which could take several months.
"There have been tests that show when a person is injected with the antibodies, that then stimulates and promotes their immune system against that disease," Cuomo said. "It's only a trial. It's a trial for people who are in serious condition, but the New York State Department of Health has been working on this with some of New York's best health care agencies, and we think it shows promise, and we're going to be starting that this week."

is there really ZERO risk to the patient from this?
ZERO? *gvh? autoimmune? anaphylaxis?
is the risk GREATER or LESS than OHCQ?
That’s how Charlton Heston cured people in The Omega Man.
I dunno, I would rather try the anti-malaria drug
It’s funny you mention The Omega Man.
Seems like we’re living it.
Are they also using the zpack and hydroxychloroquine treatment starting today?
Supply should be problem in NY.... The state known for bleeding people dry...
Great movie.
“Supply should be problem in NY.... The state known for bleeding people dry...”
Thank you! That was really funny!
Is Cuomo peddling false hope based on anecdotal evidence?
Cuomo, using an EO today, outlawed the anti-malaria drug for NYS people who are not in one of his studies.
So in NYS now, you just can't got to your doctor and ask for a prescription. The doctor has to find a study and put you in it.
Except for the trials, it's barred for the peasants.
Guarantee that he'll have it if he tests positive.
"No pharmacist shall dispense hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine except when written as prescribed for an FDA-approved indication; or as part of a state approved clinical trial related to COVID-19 for a patient who has tested positive for COVID-19, with such test result documented as part of the prescription. No other experimental or prophylactic use shall be permitted, and any permitted prescription is limited to one fourteen day prescription with no refills.
Pharmacies will be robbed and not just by criminals, but by desperate people trying to save their own or a loved one's life.
People known to have it, such as those with RA or lupus will be at risk of robbery and violence.
"Cuomo, using an EO today, outlawed the anti-malaria drug for NYS people who are not in one of his studies. "
What is needed is a test for people who think they may have had the virus, but were never tested for it because they thought they had the flu.
IF people in the studies improve the people being denied the treatment will sue the state to oblivion!! What scares me is these bastards DONT WANT this to work Trump needs to get this treatment into Louisiana also!!!
This is how we saved American citizens lives from Ebola we had the one gentleman brought back from Africa placed in Nebraska he survived we used his plasma AND it saved all of our other Ebola patients!!
We currently have antibody tests that will tell if people have had the virus! We have to use these tests when people donate blood!!!
I emailed our local health department and the guy said they were working on these tests but they weren’t available. Maybe I should contact the Red Cross to see what they know.
Thanks for the info!
Ah, I looked it up online. Apparently there is currently no test for respiratory illness when one donates blood. Bummer.
