Trump can’t guide us through coronavirus, but conservatism can help
New York Daily News ^ | 24 March 2020 | S.E. Cupp

While many state governors are stepping up to meet the continuing challenges of coronavirus in unprecedented ways, our federal government continues to let us down.

At the White House, we know the president took too long to act, dismissed the seriousness of the pandemic in the earliest days, spread misleading information about test availability and drug treatments at press briefings, and used those briefings to blame everyone from former President Obama to the media for his own leadership failures.

He has publicly contradicted and diminished his own medical experts, belittled governors for demanding more assistance, smirked at the hardship of political rivals, and personally and viciously attacked journalists.

Donald Trump has, in a word, been a disaster. He is too small a man for this big a job.

Over in Congress, the picture isn’t much prettier. While Americans are out of work, running out of money and afraid for their lives and livelihood, lawmakers squabble over procedure and petty politics. Republicans want a stimulus package to include a nearly $450 billion slush fund for Treasury and President Trump to hand out to ailing firms of their choosing.

....

Likewise, the president refuses to use the levers the federal government has, including the Defense Production Act, and tells state governments, essentially, to figure it out for themselves. “You want a pat on the back for sending 400 ventilators,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo barked at FEMA Tuesday. “What are we going to do with 400 ventilators when we need 30,000?"

It must be up to small-government conservatives to urge bigger government in a time of crisis. Federalism is an important political model for self-governance, but not when states can’t get surgical masks and hospital gowns. If there’s ever a time to feed the beast instead of starve it, it is now.

The states failures to plan ahead and be prepared constitutes an immediate crises and failure of the federal government? Who knew. The media in this country is more propaganda of the dnc then news, and it’s disgusting.

If only Hillary had been elected...she’d be big enough for the job. Or if Joe Biden were President now, he’s the man to lead us through these dark hours. Yeah, right.

I had a conversation with a judge this morning who’s a good friend of mine. Philosophical stuff, like asking him if the courthouse is closed to the public, do we still have the Rule of Law? I’m hoping that if enough of us can talk to the local pols that we know, maybe they can influence the loons in the Governor’s Office. Maybe we can bring back a little sanity and calm the panic.

Can you believe this crap? I mean, seriously. How can anyone find fault with what was laid on him?

As a reporter, why not report that Trump closed down the borders, immedicately, before any deaths, vs Obama waiting to when there were over 1000 deaths from swine flu to act.

Secondly, how about reporting, that he closed down traffic from Iran, only to have some activist judge over rule him, allowing time for the Iranians to come over.

THE NEW YORK CASES ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE IRANIANS COMING IN WHEN THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN BLOCKED.

Every statement in the article is demonstrably false. And it really is the job of hospitals, state and local health departments, and others to have an emergency plan and be able to act on it.

Leave it to Democrats like Cuomo to blame somebody else when they are completely unprepared. If Cuomo and many of the liberal residents of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut had behaved differently once the outbreak in China was known to the public they wouldn't be in the dire situation they are in now.

When exactly did Gov. Cuomo shut down New York to protect the citizens of New York? Not soon enough.

Mean looking, clipped hair, glasses wearing liberal woman. Heard this description of the stereotypical liberal woman on Michael Savage a few times. So true.

A more substantive comment would help. It’s getting pointless to discuss anything here when everything is insults about appearance.

Conservatism is a word for something not very clearly defined that people can apply to different things in different ways. Saying that “conservatism” can solve the crisis is vapid, given that few seem to agree on just what conservatism is and who is a conservative. Since most of those who most people would call conservatives probably back Trump the comment is particularly vacuous.
