This is a really good technical summary of where we are. This guy screams competence. We're all covered up with too many Covid docs, THIS one is worth reading. This guy should be drafted by the CDC yesterday. Really good summary of what we're up against.
Hit the source link, it's a 6M 38 page *.pdf hosted at Google Docs.
Here's his page at Stanford:

Ignore some of the media BS and read this, it's worthwhile. He does criticize Trump, mildly, but I suppose that's required if you're at Stanford. Still a useful document.

The key passage is here - the CDC pushed for manufacturers to ramp up the production of existing drugs used against similar bugs only when Trump’s mention of a quinine derivative during a presser delivered a kick to the CDC’s collective ass. That’s what cutting red tape looks like, done by a pro:
[CDC being too slow to understand and discuss treatments and vaccines
Already approved drugs like chloroquine, favipiravir, and Kaletra can be used off-label
without FDA re-approval, and doctors look to CDC for guidance.
CDC could have persuaded or contracted with drug manufacturers to produce more of
these upon first indication of their efficacy, to be prepared.
It seems CDC did no such thing, as US manufacturers are only starting up chloroquine
production now, after its mention in a White House press conference on 3/19]

President Trump went over the heads of the FDA and CDC and spoke directly to American people to put pressure on the bureaucrats to get the ball rolling

The political takeaway from this is a broken federal bureaucracy. Trump’s response was only going to be as good as the information he was getting from the CDC. They have proven to be a complete failure.

As much as it pains me to admit it, the CDC is coming out of this with a big loss of credibility.

Laz, I loss most of my respect for the CDC when they got heavily involved in tracking gun violence. They were obviously off course. That was nearly 10 years ago.

I have a story to tell you, but no motivation at the moment. Remember, 10 years ago was plunk in the middle of the OTrauma administration, and they did a nice pivot on Barack that messed up his plans.

Best data out there in one place.

Even though the author seems to praise Fauci, I can only conclude that Fauci goofed big time. Hes been with CDC, NIH, both political parties for a long time but he didnt do anything until Trump got the ball rolling. And why do we expect Trump to be on top of this. Its guys like Fauci who should have sounded the alarm and raise hell. He did not.

“the CDC is coming out of this with a big loss of credibility.”
That’s because they are in competition with the Public Health Service (PHS) for the President’s attention. Neither are doing what’s right, only what’s politically expedient.

Kinda glad I'm not with them any more. They used to be one of the most respected Federal Agencies we have. I suspect that is because their original founding was Army-based, coming from a disease-control unit (post World-War II.)
But they have morphed into something else.

Its guys like Fauci who should have sounded the alarm and raise hell. He did not. I really agree with you on that. The author seemed to be spot on in his/her analysis of the basic data, the critique of the CDC and the FDA but lost me with the list of White House failures. Every item mentioned has been pushed hard by Trump. And the idea that Fauci should be the voice of the Administration is absurd.
But, if you overlook the anti-Trump propaganda, this is the best technical summary I have seen. Every a Freeper should read it.

Slide 29 is total bullcrap to anyone paying attention. He blames Trump and doubles down with saying Fauci should have been given the spotlight, even though Fauci has been one of the biggest impediments to the use of existing antivirals. This goes against most of the data and reports that he cites previous to this slide. So why does he do this? Because his lab is funded with NIAID grants and he is kissing Fauci’s ass here to stay on good terms with the NIH. His opinions about Fauci and Trump are biased by access to public money.
