Rapid Coronavirus Test Approved by FDA,... Results in 45 Minutes....(available in the next few weeks)

Cepheid, a California-based diagnostic testing company, announced on Saturday that the FDA approved the use of its XpertXpress Sars-CoV-2 rapid molecular diagnostic test for the detection of the Chinese coronavirus that causes COVID-19..... The test is designed to work on any of the company’s more than 23,000 automated worldwide testing systems. The test provides results in about 45 minutes, company officials said in a written statement.

“The test we’re authorizing today will be able to provide Americans with results within hours, rather than days like the existing tests, and the company plans to roll it out by March 30, which is an incredibly rapid timeline for such an effort. With new tools like point-of-care diagnostics, we are moving into a new phase of testing, where tests will be much more easily accessible to Americans who need them,” HHS Secretary Alex Azar said in a Saturday press release. “With the development of point of care diagnostics, Americans who need tests will be able to get results faster than ever before. More and more options for reliable, convenient testing are becoming available at an incredibly rapid pace, thanks to the hard work of our FDA team and the ingenuity of American industry.”

“Our automated systems do not require users to have specialty training to perform testing — they are capable of running 24/7, with many systems already doing so today,” Cepheid President Warren Kocmond added.

The company says it will begin shipping the tests next week.

Have read early on of high percentage of false positive results w current tests, thus potentially inflating the # of cases.

Wonder if true and if this test fares any better

Whole bunch of people are going to be disappointed if Trump comes through and the economy doesn’t tank for eva. People on both sides. Left thinking we got him this time and right, evidently thinking he’s getting duped by the left, even after how many times he hasn’t. Fair weather supporters who must think he’s stupid. Luckiest dumb bastard ever.

It seems like the test now may have a lot of false positives and false negatives.

93% of those who show up for testing who think they have the virus don’t. Now we can all fall under this hypochondriac syndrome-it just shows the power of advertising or media-repeat something enough and perception becomes reality.

Now there is a home testing kit available for these mentally ill hypochondriacs:

At-home coronavirus tests now available, companies say (Fox News)

As coronavirus testing in the U.S. continues to lag behind that in other highly affected countries such as South Korea, several domestic startups are reportedly launching the first at-home tests.

The products have been greenlit by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under new expedited guidelines to help combat the virus, according to Stat, a health care industry news outlet.

One such test provider is Nurx, a San Francisco-based company best known for home testing products for sexually transmitted infections and birth control, now offers testing kits for COVID-19 through the mail for $181 after prospective customers fill out an online form with their symptoms.

“We don’t look for the severity of symptoms, only the presence of them. They can range from mild to severe,” Nurx spokeswoman Allison Hoffman told SFGate.com. “But, people with truly severe symptoms should also seek immediate care. … In terms of temperature in particular, we determine a fever is 100.4 [degrees] plus.”

After filling out the online survey, Nurx will determine if testing is necessary based on the person’s symptoms and will mail the test via expedited shipping.

Nurx can give customers lab results within 48 hours of receiving the test, SFGate reported.

“We are pivoting from our prior service lines to make this available,” Chris Hall, senior clinical adviser for Nurx, told Stat. “It’s a heavy lift, but we think it’s important.”

Today we are introducing the first #COVID19 home testing and online consultation service. We’re eager to safely connect people with certain symptoms and risk factors with testing and medical care.

Nurx and its longstanding home testing lab partner, Molecular Testing Labs, are launching telehealth consultations and home testing for people who may have been exposed to COVID-19.

By Friday evening, Nurx’s website said it had hit capacity and would reopen Saturday morning.

I can’t recall reading about high percentage of false positives or false negatives from the COVID-19 tests USED IN THE UNITED STATES. Some earlier tests used overseas had such problems.

This is wonderful news. Judging by the number of replies, people don’t understand how much this speeds up identifying carriers and isolating them and treating them.
