Maker of Purell accused of 'misleading' customers in class-action lawsuit

GOJO, the maker of Purell hand sanitizer, is facing two class-action lawsuits accusing it of "misleading claims" that it can prevent "99.9 percent of illness-causing germs." The most recent lawsuit, filed by four people March 13 in federal court for the Northeastern District of Ohio, comes as retailers scramble to keep hand sanitizer in stock amid a coronavirus outbreak that has infected more than 230,000 people around the world and forced millions of Americans to stay at home indefinitely.

Purell's label states the product can kill "99.9 percent of illness-causing germs." The suit claims that it's misleading because it implies "sound scientific support when none exists."

"These claims lack a scientific basis, rendering the affirmative misrepresentations misleading," the lawsuit says.

In a statement, GOJO president and CEO Carey Jaros called the accusations "without merit" and said that the company stands "100 percent behind the products."

This whole thing with people getting worked up over sanitizer is really even more ridiculous than the toilet paper situation. Hand sanitizer is not as good as washing your hands, not even close but its better than nothing.

Yknow what kills just about everything? Bleach. Ive been folding up a few paper towels and putting it in a ziplock bag. Then dribble a little bleach in the bag, seal it, and roll your hand around on the bag until the whole towel is damp. Don’t over do it, you don’t want the baggie to have pools in it that might leak. Just enough to get the whole thing damp all the way through.

When Im out and I have to use my hand on a doorknob or something I use the layered bleach towel. I disinfect the community doorknobs and things as I walk around using them. When I have to push the pads I hold it in my palm and stick my finger between the layers so that Ive got a bleach sock on my finger. If I bump some part of my hand on something I can press it on that area so that moistens that area and wipe it right back up.

Keep the baggie sealed and in your pocket when youre not using it and you don’t smell like bleach when youre walking around.

Youre protected and youre helping to protect everyone else in the mean time and you still wash your hands when youre done.

No cooties and no need to worry about some silly shortages.

I think I missunderstood that technical stuff from the CDC. I found many other articles from health departments, etc. written for lay people that 3% Hydrogen Peroxide staying wet on a surface for 6 to 8 minutes is effective against a corona virus.

The key though is “wet” for all of them. I never knew that until a couple of months ago. I thought wiping down a table with a Clorox wipe was good enough. But using just one wipe on that large of an area - it doesn’t stay wet long enough.

Peroxide degrades quickly. The percentage must start at a point, such that the time required for treatment finds the residual potency sufficient for a kill.

For sterilization in minimal time, use at least a 12% potency. A 35% food grade without stabilizers is available commercially as a strength not requiring treating it as a potential explosive.

Handle this with precautions as one might handle a caustic such as quick lime. Causes burns if inhaled or touches skin. Wear PPE. Dilute with distilled water for a suitable level of disinfectant.

"191 proof pure ethyl alcohol in a small aerosol spray bottle. A spritz or two will do the job nicely. But, keep away from open flame."

And DUI check points. LOL

What’s wrong with good old fashioned hot water and soap?

None of my microbilogists use hand sanitizer.. they are soap and water fanatics.
This sounds connected to the extraordinary rise in hospital acquired infection witth folks using primarily hand sanitizer.. rarely soap and water.

So true.

It should be that way. We’re paying a lot of tax dollars for frivolous lawsuits. We pay for the courthouses, the judges, and all the personnel associated with the system.

Let’s hope this nutty lawsuit is tossed, too. Don’t people realize all these massive payouts increase the cost of goods and services? No... I guess they don’t.

I was going to suggest lighter fluid but I like the way you think.
