L.A. County gives up on containing coronavirus, tells doctors to skip testing of some patients

The nation’s second-largest municipal health system has told its staff that it is essentially abandoning hope of containing the coronavirus outbreak and instructed doctors not to bother testing symptomatic patients if a positive result won’t change how they would be treated.

The guidance, sent by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services to its doctors on Thursday, was prompted by a crush of patients and shortage of tests, and could make it difficult to ever know precisely how many people in L.A. County contracted the virus.

The department “is shifting from a strategy of case containment to slowing disease transmission and averting excess morbidity and mortality,” according to the letter. Doctors should test symptomatic patients only when “a diagnostic result will change clinical management or inform public health response.”

The guidance sets in writing what has been a reality all along. The shortage of tests nationwide has meant that many patients suspected of having COVID-19 have not had the diagnosis confirmed by a laboratory.

And Trump wins re-election and Nanzi dies in a insane asylum. I’ll take it.

Many of them may have picked a bad time to congregate for Kobe’s funeral, and other events.

The CDC/FDA has only had 10+ years since H1N1 and 17 years since SARS (a corona virus) to be ready for a serious viral pandemic. They seem to have failed miserably. I bet they’ve been on the forefront of dealing with gender dysphoria issues and transgenderism, though.

LA wants to be in the situation NYC is in?

Testing and quarantining contacts [whatever they did in Korea and Taiwan] is way cheaper than what we are [not] doing.

Get a ton of test kits from Korea. Tell the FDA to screw off and come back with your test when this is over.

An Ebola patient treated in the U.S. chose to remain anonymous. Now he’s telling his story.

...With the infection progressing rapidly, Gorman’s chances of survival in Sierra Leone were zero. In the NIH’s Special Clinical Studies Unit, one of the most advanced medical facilities in the world, his odds were only slightly better.

One by one, Gorman’s organs began to fail. His kidneys, his liver, his heart and his lungs were overwhelmed, his immune system unable to stop the virus, said Richard Davey, chief of NIAID’s clinical research section and Gorman’s lead physician. Gorman also developed brain inflammation.

But a computer randomized him to the control group. There would be no ZMapp for him...

All these big urban areas are going to be like NYC and Italy. Their density works against them.

It’s also politics. They want to spread it as much as possible to make this as big a mess as possible since it’s on Trump’s watch and he’s up for reelection. Trump’s Katrina and all that.

There is a reason why Trump himself is giving daily briefings and in 24x7 crisis management mode. He knows what is at stake.

Hmmm...looks like, if they recover, they “NEVER HAD COVID-19” since there was no test confirming it. So they won’t count in the stats as confirmed. If they die, however, “THEY DIED FROM COVID-19”.

The a good mathematical technique for heightening the disease’s death rate. Maybe that’s the intent? By the way, they have plenty of test kits available.

There is little point. There is an antibody test being developed, a blood test. That will make it easier. The whole test thing is overblown.
What was done in Singapore worked because they have 1/7 millionth the land area and 2 million rather than 330 million people. It is not nor will it ever be feasible in the USA.

And the urban campers. Since they will likely get serious cases first, they will fill the hospital beds. Those with actual homes will have to be sent home to hopefully recover, but if they die, they die.

I think this is different. I have read two personal accounts of people whose tests came back positive, and in both cases the patients were simply told to go home and self-isolate for several weeks.

The point here is that if someone is presenting COVID-19 symptoms but isn’t seriously sick, what’s the point of wasting a test on them if there is no special treatment for the infection? And if someone has NO symptoms, why test them at all?

Also, with PPE being so scarce, I would think that testing would tell providers which patients they have to ‘suit up’ for v more general precautions.

At the end of the article it says the county health services is stopping testing; private labs are doing the testing instead.

“ Sounds like Italy when they let the old folks die.”

Yeah, that’s it. Or maybe it’s like other ailments like strep, where if you meet certain criteria you are treated as if you have it.
